Update, 4:21 pm: Ruben Amaro told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the interest in Soler is very real.
Amaro told the Inky, “Our scouts have seen him and we like him. It may come down to where he wants to play and, of course, the money.”
Bob Brookover writes that whoever signs the young outfielder will have to stash him for a while. Are you willing to spend in upwards of $20 million on a guy who might not be here for at least one year?
—————-
Thursday 8:14 am: On Wednesday, Buster Olney of ESPN.com tweeted that the Phillies had interest in Cuban standout Jorge Soler. On Thursday night, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reiterated that, saying the Phillies and Yankees were “in hardest” on Soler.
CSNChicago.com also reported that the Phillies were hot on the trail of the 19-year-old outfielder. The Cubs were said to have offered Soler a four-year, $27.5 million deal, but the team called that “ludicrous.”
Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus ranks Soler as the 39th overall prospect in baseball.
That supposed $27 million deal is interesting. In the past, the Phillies have shown a reluctance to get involved in high-prices, foreign talent. Perhaps it was because of their own spending limitations. However, if that dollar amount is anywhere near a ballpark figure, the Phillies are truly out of their league and are stepping into unknown territory, both from a team aspect and regarding the player.
While I’m all for the Phillies spending some money to lure talent from outside the U.S., this would stand as a ballsy move. You’d be shelling millions out to an relative unknown who hasn’t even reached a legal drinking age (we think). That puts pressure on the kid to play at a high level now and puts pressure on the team to get as much out of him over the life of that enormous deal as possible. That could be playing with fire.

Funny, I thought I saw this posted late last night with a few comments on it….
Regardless, I highly doubt the Phillies are willing to pay what it’s going to cost to get him, even thiugh he would instantly become the best prospect in the organization. It’s just not how this ownership group has ever acted

Nothing about the past five years is “how this ownership group has ever acted” …. I wouldn’t be surpised to see them go get this kid …. I’ve read multiple reports of his POWER, and a bunch of comparisons to Mike Stanton from the Marlins ..
Adding a #1 Propsect to your organziation for $30 M or so … is something that they can definitely afford.. and like a few reports are saying, because he is so young, I would imagine the deal is more likely to be for 6-years than 4 years.
He would be a backup plan should Brown not work-out … Victorino/Pence cost too much to keep, etc … I for one would love the Phillies to show that they are a player in the International FA market too!

I agree ..offering. that much too an unknown is not a good way to judge talent ..I think athletes should. Prove talents first before getting paid

With the new CBA, there will be a hard cap on international signings which will make it difficult to make moves like this… I actually think that the new rules will benefit the Phillies who are NOT big spenders internationally. The rule hurts the teams that traditionally spend the most internationally AND the small market teams that make international scouting a high priority. All that being said, if you’re the Phillies and if this is the guy you want, now is the time to do it.
There is talk that MLB is working towards an international draft… if that happens, forget any and all competitive advantages with regards to international scouting.

We’re still talking the guy needs a year or two to develop before he is ML ready.

The heavily hyped and more experienced Yoenis Cespedes signed for less than $40 million.
I doubt that Soler will get as much, so I think he’s not that high of a risk given his potential.

Not that high of risk because we arent the ones dishing out $25 mill. Lol…

The Rays have made themselves into a pretty good team by taking these kinds of risks. Longoria and Moore come to mind. Both had almost no experience in the ML when they were signed to some hefty extensions. Teams don’t improve much unless they take a few risks. I’m sure that if Soler doesn’t have the potential, no one would be particularly interested, but he’s in several teams’ sights.
And just because you might Lol, (an Andrew from Waldorf defense) apparently the people who are going to spend the money, like the Yanks, Cubs, or Phils, aren’t. So I doubt Soler is considered a huge risk by anyone except perhaps a few tightwad fans.

I heard that, too, on MLB last night, that Soler was being compared to Mike Stanton. Phils should be a serious player with this. He could be a good one.

Nothing like a good rumor to get this started (smile). Never mind the idea of “breaking the bank” would run contrary to the Phillies’ goal of keeping within their defined budget.
I want mention that Gary Carter has died at age 57 (brain tumor). He brought a lot of joy to the game regardless of what team(s) he played on. Thus his nickname “Kid”. R.I.P.

Good man bringing up Carter. Guy was a hell of a catcher, and no matter who he played for, we can all agree the guy was one of the few great personalities along with his ability on the field. The Bigs need more players like him. R.I.P.

Anyone know if we sign him but he doesn’t make te 25-man roster, it shouldn’t touch the payroll right ? It would be just the same as any other amateur ??

40-man roster is the one he would have to make to be on the major league payroll. But the majority that 20-30 million figure is likely an enormous a signing bonus, not his salary, and won’t count towards the cap whether or not he makes the roster.

I know it would be a risk, but is it worth taking? Seeing that it is not my money, and that if it would not interfer with this years payroll and possible next years, seeing he is only 19 i think it may be worth the risk, especially with the questions in the outfield going forward, Is JMJ going to be a stud or a platoon guy, are they going to be able to keep Pence and Vic past next year is Dom Brown going to step up and be a star? This I think is where you take risk with the money they have been making, Will not effect extending Cole and with all the talk about a new TV Deal ticket prices going up and a seemilngly endless sell outs it I think that in the big picture 25 million is not that much over four years especially if it does not go against the cap

Guys, 30 million over something like 7 or 8 years is next to nothing to the Phils who are in line to re-up their television contract in a few years for BILLIONS. Billions.
Not to mention that if the kid actually turns into a solid outfielder that’s a bargain price at today’s market, and it’s only going to seem like more of a discount in 6 or 7 years when you factor in salary inflation (which is set to ramp due to other teams picking up massive TV deals as well).

I have no idea how good Soler is. None. But if they do sign him to that much money I would think that he would jump right in front of Brown on the depth chart.

Reports are that Soler would need a year or two in the minors before he would be ready for the majors. So I don’t think he would just auto jump in front of Brown because Brown could reach the majors faster.

It’s generally a very poor idea to align your depth chart solely based upon salary.

No chance in hell the Phils are going to dish out this kind of money for an UNPROVEN commodity.
Its not going to happen

Is Domonic Brown even on a depth chart anymore? Just kidding, of course, but signing Soler would DEFINITELY send a message to Brown….and every other prospect…..that they are making a splash towards the future of the organization. The competition would be a positive thing and I think the Phillies should do it if they do their proper due diligence and feel he’s worth whatever risk is involved.
Brooks…this isn’t the Phillies of the mid-90s and early 2000s anymore….the pre-Thome era. I think they WOULD do it.

I hope we sign him. The amount of money is really small when compared to what the Phillies are already investing… plus that sweet new broadcast deal that’s in the works.
