Five players possibly on the move not named Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth

Five players who may be on the move

You already know about Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth, the three darlings of this free-agent class. But as baseball’s general managers gather in Orlando, Fla., how is the trade market shaping up? We target five players who may be shopped this offseason:

1. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, San Diego
Talk about a tough spot for Padres general manager Jed Hoyer. On the one hand, his team finished on the cusp of the 2010 playoffs and Gonzalez is his best player. On the other hand, Hoyer knows he won’t be able to re-sign Gonzalez after this season -- and most everyone in baseball knows it, too. Gonzalez is the best position player on the block, a serious slugger whose numbers have been depreciated by playing half his games at spacious Petco Park.

2. Prince Fielder, 1B, Milwaukee
The second-best hitter available, Fielder, 26, was an on-base machine in 2010, coaxing a league-high 114 walks. But his power dipped some. He has two strikes against him, one long-term and one short-term. First, the present: Fielder is a Scott Boras client and very likely to test the market as a free agent in 2012, no matter which team rents him for 2011. And the future: His body type -- 5-11, 270 pounds -- is terrifying for any team considering a multi-year deal.

3. Zack Greinke, P, Kansas City

The Cy Young Award winner in 2009, Greinke regressed somewhat in 2010, but remains a potentially elite pitcher. He also likely wants out of Kansas City, whose best hitting prospects still remain a few years from the majors. His contract contains a no-trade clause to 15 teams. It is unclear who is on the list, but it appears large markets are out of the question.

4. Mark Reynolds, 3B, Arizona
The Sheriff presents a puzzling case. He possesses power, that most tantalizing tool. Reynolds hit 44 homers in 2009 and despite a drop-off in 2010, still hit 32 last season. But he is baseball’s premier strikeout artist, a man who has whiffed an average of 213 times a year in his three full seasons. His below-average defense at the hot corner also raises red flags.

5. B.J. Upton, OF, Tampa Bay
What to make of Bossman Junior? He has yet to duplicate that magnificent 2007 season, when he slugged .508 and looked like a future five-tool star. He was 22 then. He turns 26 next summer and his plate approach does not appear to be improving. In each of the past four seasons, he has struck out at least 130 times, with a career-high 164 whiffs in 2010.

Only two players on the list the Yanks might be interested in - Greinke and Upton. The first has had past emotional issues and would never be able to stand the scrutiny of playing in NY - the second is another Granderson - maybe Long could help him with his hitting. But having Upton would mean getting rid of Swisher who had a great year and is a positive clubhouse presence - a fan favorite who truly loves being a Yankee. I also think Upton would wilt under the NY pressure if he isn't successful right away.

I could see the Yankees grabbing on to Justin Upton as he has a great deal of talent, his only problem is being stuck in Arizona where they must have had the worst batting coach possible. Team strikeouts for the Dbacks were ridiculously high, and yes Justin does tend to strikeout more than he should, but leaving that system could turn his offense around, he was a all star. Grienke is not coming to the yankees. Greinke could hardly handle the spotlight in KANSAS CITY where the fans are few and far in between, he would have to cry after ever game in NY and would NOT make it. I could see dumping Swish for Upton (although I don't agree with it I could see it happening), but other than picking up Cliff Lee I think that would be all we should do in this off season... actually shopping for another good starter seems necessary unless Burnett can have a miracle turn around season (highly doubtful, guys a bum).
