Speaking at a Villanova Law School symposium last Friday, Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane of “Moneyball” fame revealed that the key concept of his cost-conscious strategy to acquire cheap, valuable talent was partially derived from the 1993 Phillies.
Really? John Kruk paved the way for Scott Hatteberg’s shift to first base? Jim Eisenreich and Pete Incaviglia were the early versions of Jeremy Giambi and an aging David Justice?
“I was right here in Philadelphia watching the World Series,” Beane told the Philadelphia Inquirer at Friday’s panel regarding “Moneyball’s Impact on Business and Sports.” “Those ’93 Phillies took a ton of pitches, walked a ton, and scored a ton of runs. That’s when it hit me.”
Plate discipline was an underrated aspect of the 1993 Phillies, a team remembered more for its grit and personality than the unsexy nature with which it won baseball games.
Those Phillies led the National League by walking in 10.2 percent of their plate appearances. The team’s aggregate .351 on-base percentage also led the NL.
Of the 11 Phillies to compile 300 or more plate appearances in ’93, six had OBPs of .360 or higher. Four players — Kruk, Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra and Kevin Stocker — were above .390.
The 2001 Athletics – the team depicted in Michael Lewis’s “Moneyball” and later in Bennett Miller’s film – had four regulars record .360-plus on-base percentages. Only two were above .390, brothers Jason and Jeremy Giambi. Oakland’s .345 team mark that year was six points lower than the OBP of the Phillies.
Both teams spent little relative to the rest of the league. Jim Fregosi’s pennant-winning squad had the seventh-lowest payroll of any non-expansion team. Art Howe’s 102-win A’s had the second-lowest.
In many ways, the ’93 Phils out-Moneyballed the Moneyballers.
Seid-notesWhat is most jarring looking back at the ’93 Phils and ’01 A’s and the current state of baseball is that, as much as on-base percentage is thought to be coveted these days, so few teams actually get on base.
In 1993, four teams had OBPs of .350 or higher.
In 2001, three teams reached that mark.
In 2011, zero teams did.
In 1993, the median team on-base percentage was .330.
In 2001, the height of the steroid era when batters were feared and pitches were taken at astronomical rates, the median OBP was .334.
Last season it was .319.
To go one step further, only three teams in 1993 got on base below a .319 clip. Only two did so in 2001.
Are we really to believe that it was performance-enhancing drugs alone accounting for that 15 percent OBP increase, and that a .330 median OBP is impossible solely through plate discipline?

I highly recommend reading “Three Nights in August” after you get done with Moneyball … I love both books

The 93 team was so much fun to watch because of the style they played. Smart management, smart players, always kept you on the edge of your seat because you knew that at any time they could manufacture excitement. I believe Jim Fregosi does not get the credit he deserves. Even Nails was considered an extremely sharp baseball man (according to Kruk), despite his obvious poor judgement and life decisions thereafter.
@Don M, I will get the book you recommended. I loved Moneyball, the book, I haven’t seen the movie.

I have been reading that waiting for the start of the season to extend Hamels allows them to keep under ( or close to) this year’s threshold. Hope that’s the reason for the delay.
Can anyone verify that?

The Valdez trade was tough for all his fans, I get that. I will miss his rocket arm. But I applaud RA Jr. for acquiring 26 year old Jeremy Horst. At some point he has to bring in some youthful guys that may be ready to make the jump soon. He has invited a good [...]
