The Vanimal Will Be Stalking The D-backs For His Next Feeding

" rel="bookmark">

Last night, Cliff Lee earned his 13th game of the year.

Tonight, the Vanimal is going for his 9th.

Vance Worley (8-1, 2.85 ERA) will take on the D-backs.  Vance’s last start proved to be a a short outing that ended up in a no-decision, but a Phillies win over the Dodgers.  He threw 4 innings, yielding 6 earned runs on 7 hits, issuing free passes to three, while K-ing 6.  The Phillies would end up coming back from a 6-0 deficit to win 9-8, en route to capping off their best 10-game road trip in franchise history.  Even with his bad outing, the Rec-Spec’d Wonder is ready to bounce back.

“I got tagged,” Worley said. “I’m human.”

Just because he’s human doesn’t mean he can’t become dominant again.

Arizona’s ace, Ian Kennedy (15-3, 3.12 ERA) will take the hill for the D-backs.  In his last seven starts he has pulled out a win.  In his last start, Kennedy tossed 7 strong innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, walked 3, and struck out 5 Mets.  Kennedy has proven to be the “ace” of the D-backs.  His 15-3 record sports a .853 winning percentage, a Major League leading mark.  Kennedy has been in talks of contention for the NL Cy Young Award.

Sorry kid.  Even though you’re pitching great this year, you still have a lot of guys to beat out.

Last night,  Ryan Howard swung his lumber and seemed to be in pain.  He went down into the clubhouse after his at-bat, but returned to finish the game.  No word as to what’s ailing the big piece, but as a piece of wild speculation let’s say it may be an oblique strain.  Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz are not in the lineup tonight, but Charlie Manuel said they are available if needed.

Those two won’t be alone on the bench tonight, either, as Shane Victorino will begin to serve his suspension for his roll in a bench clearing brawl with the Giants back on August 5th.  He was initially supposed to receive a three game suspension, but after appealing it, the mandatory vacation was cut to two games.  The fact that he is being suspended and Eli Whiteside isn’t, still continues to bewilder most in the Phillies Nation.  All the major parties concerned with the brawl received fines of an undisclosed amount,  but the Flyin’ Hawaiian was the only one suspended.

With Polanco, Victorino, and Howard not in the lineup, the Phillies’ bench players will have to come up big.  John Mayberry Jr. is batting .263 with 9 HR and 32 RBI.  Either Wilson Valdez or Michael Martinez will fill in for Polly at the hot corner, while Ross Gload will take over first base for the Big Piece. Brian Schneider will fill in for Carlos Ruiz behind the plate.  Chooch took a foul ball right to the little Chooches Tuesday night.  He has been diagnosed with a “left testicle contusion” and should be ready for the weekend series with the Nationals.  As stated earlier, he is available if needed.

Tonight’s game may be the last time the Phillies play the D-backs until October.  Arizona sits 2 1/2 games above San Francisco  in the NL West, while the Braves lead the NL Wild Card.  The Phillies have lost only one of 15 series since June 17-19 in Seattle and Worley will try to keep that run intact.

The D-backs lead the Phillies in their season series 4-3.  Let’s get to .500 against the snakes!
