As this successful road trip comes closer to an end, the Phillies keep adding W’s to their season column, 75 to be exact. Headed into this three-game set with the Dodgers, Roy Halladay had high expectations. A 14 game winner with a sub 2.60 ERA, going head-to-head with a team that sits in the bottom of the NL West. It seemed almost too easy. Doc would prevail on top to get his National League leading 15th win with the help of his friends in the dugout. With the Phillies being as hot as they are, they could clinch by mid-late September (Don’t quote me, I suck at math and I am guessing).
In his latest outing vs the Dodgers, Roy let up just his first run in the 5th inning. He threw 111 pitches through 6 1/3 innings, allowing 9 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 4. After leaving with a 4-1 lead, the bullpen would give us all a scare. Bastardo got out of Doc’s jam in the 7th, only to be followed by Mike Stutes in the 8th. Stutes allowed 2 earned runs on 2 hits, only getting one out. Brad Lidge came in to try and help out, but seemed to only make it a bit scarier. He walked a batter and after an ugly play between Juan Rivera and Chase Utley, he maintained the 4-3 lead. Ryan Madson, fresh off the paternity list, recorded his 20th save of the season to seal the deal.
Shane Victorino, who is currently playing during a suspension that he’s appealing, went 3-5, with a home run and scored three runs tonight. Take that Bud Selig. Shove it, you suspend one guy instead of three or four. Sure, he deserves to be suspended for charging the mound, but Eli Whiteside clearly attacked Placido Polanco. He is given just a f-ing fine? It’s ridiculous. The guy obviously wanted to start something, so he did. Bud Selig just wants to get back at the Phillies for that sweet whoopin’ we gave CC and the Brew Crew back in ’08. Get a grip Bud, you suck. Ban A-Rod and free Pete Rose.
Ryan Howard also helped out in his own way tonight. The Big Piece went 2-5, with a double, and drove in his 88th and 89th RBI’s to stretch his league lead further. Brewers’ Prince Fielder (85) and Dodgers’ Matt Kemp (84) follow behind him.
Final: Phillies 5, Dodgers 4.
Injury News: Placido Polanco has been diagnosed with a sports hernia. He will be given a shot tomorrow and will try to play through it. On Friday, he will be reevaluated. If all goes well, he can play, but there is a possibility of surgery (not season-ending). So we’ll keep an eye on Polly.
Tomorrow night, Cliff Lee (11-7, 2.96 ERA) will take on Ted Lilly (7-11, 4.86 ERA) in a lefty vs. lefty pitching match up. Lee will be looking to follow up on his complete game shut out over the Giants on Thursday. Lilly is coming off a hard loss where he allowed 1 earned run over 6 innings and his team didn’t help out.
