Last week we had our first ever “Mustache Of The Week.” As a bit of a mustache aficionado, I was really looking forward to gracing the pages of the Blunt with ‘stachey gloriousness, but after this beaut, I’m afraid there won’t be another. This Phils fan was spotted in between innings by the Phillies broadcast team during Friday’s game against the Nationals. I don’t know much about this guy, but I do know that I want to be his friend in the worst way. I assume he drives a Harley, and would constantly tell me what it was like in ‘Nam, but I’d deal with that if he would let me touch this cotton candy twister just once. There may be some debate as to whether or not this is technically a mustache, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s a Phillies fan, and it is epic. So here it is folks, the last mustache of the week….probably.
Play Of The Week
This is a no brainer. It’s a milestone 600th home run for former-Phillie Jim Thome. Thome became the 8th member of the exclusive 600 dinger club, and made it there at the second fastest pace, behind only Babe Ruth. What really pushed this play over the top as our Play of the Week was the fact the Jim Thome is a genuinely great guy by all accounts. You would have never seen us covering A-Hole’s 600th home run last year. And what’s more, when Thome was asked if there was any coach that had the most influence in his illustrious bomb hitting career he answered, “Charlie Manuel, no question.” Well Mr. Thome, well played. Well played indeed. You just earned yourself a Bluntie. I’m sure it will sit prominently on your shelf with all your other hardware.
Side Note: We here in Philly have always loved Jim Thome, from his days in CBP and even when he moved on. So we may not be the classiest people, but at least we can recognize class, and applaud it. People will debate whether or not Thome deserves to be in the Hall of Fame after he retires (which he does) but one thing is clear, Jim Thome is a Hall of Fame person. Something he cares more about anyways.
Phillie Of The WeekSo you want to be a Major League catcher? Well then try these words on for size: testicular contusion. In case you’re not a doctor, that means bruised nut, ball, man-berry, what have you. That’s what Chooch was diagnosed with after taking a pitch from Roy Halladay in Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks square of his (big) little Choochers. Chooch has taken some time off from his duties behind the plate, while his Panamanian huevos recuperate, and we’d say he earned the days off. We all love Chooch (how could you not) so while not everything is going Ruiz’s way, we figured we’d throw him this bluntie. Actually, throwing it might not be a good idea, so we’ll gently place it down and let him pick it up himself. Gotta watch out for the goods so Carlos can produce more children which he will inevitably just name Carlos.
Tweet Of The Week
The Phillies train ride down to D.C. last night must have been extremely boring because Jimmy Rollins went on a twitter tear. He tweeted on everything from Jim Thome’s 600th home run (in which he referred to Thome as his “big homie”) to the rapper Game’s (he dropped the “The”) new album in which, apparently, the rapper name drops Roy Halladay. There was some confusion at first when JRoll said that Doc was on the new album. ”Doc rapping?” everyone jested, but Jimmy cleared the air with this definitive response. Using Doc’s name in a rhyme: okay, but Doc actually spitting truth over beats: now that’s something I’d pay top dollar for. A boy can dream.
