Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

Eighty Wins…You Heard?

Yeah you heard it, 80 wins.  That’s swag.

Okay enough rambling, it’s late, so let’s treat you all quickly.

Tonight’s game showed that Mother Nature screwed the Vanimal from feeding on his prey.

Vance Worley was searching for his 9th win of the season tonight, and he was cruising along pretty smoothly through the first three innings.  He only threw 30 pitches (23 of them strikes), yielding 1 hit, and struck out 2 before he was halted by the rain.  It’s a shame that the Vanimal’s start was cut short.  It looked like he was sure to go deep into the game, possibly a complete game.  His counter part, Ian Kennedy had a different trip tonight.  In three innings, he allowed 3 earned runs on just 5 hits.  In the bottom of the 3rd, John Mayberry Jr. took him deep off of the left field foul pole for a two-run home run.  That’s all the boys in red pinstripes would need.

For two hours and seventeen minutes puddles filled Citizens Bank Park.  The tarps finally came off of the field around 10:20 PM.  David Herndon resumed the game on the hill, and he did his job…and did it damn well: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 K.  From there, the Stutes-Bastardo-Madson train would chug along, yet again.  But back to Herndon; he was phenomenal.  His solid three innings earned him his first win of the season.  He also our “Player Of the Game Award” (don’t expect a trophy in the mail, Herndon).

Madson threw a 1-2-3 9th to seal the deal for the Phillies, who won their 80th game of the year.  It took 122 games for the Phils to get to 80 wins, one shy of their record in 1976 (121 games).  We are certainly on the right path to October.

Tomorrow, the Phils head to Washington for a weekend series.  Roy Oswalt (5-7, 3.84 ERA) will take on Livan Hernandez (7-11, 4.21 ERA) in the series opener.

Hope you all enjoyed the quick post, now off to bed.

Final: Phillies win 4-1.
