Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke
There’s A Vanimal Unleashed In San Francisco, Be AfraidThe earthquake sirens have already sounded in San Francisco, and all of you Giants fans better hide your kids, hide your wives and hide your husbands. Why all the hubbub? Well boys and girls, Vance Worley (7-1, 2.33 ERA) is on the hill tonight for the Phillies. That’s right, the Vanimal is back to attack, and he’s getting ready right now. Worley’s coming off a tempered start against the Pirates in which he went 6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K in a 6-5 Phillies win.
In his last start against the Giants (7/26), Vance Worley dealt pure filth. In his first career complete game, he allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 5. Speaking of complete games, Cliff Lee has left a path for young Vance to follow tonight. His complete game shut out last night boosted the Phillies 8 1/2 games ahead of the Braves in the NL East. If the Braves lose tonight and Vance can dance, the Phillies will be in the drivers seat with a 9 game lead.
Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.81 ERA) will take the bump in his home ballpark tonight. It’s Sanchez’s first start against the Phillies since Game 6 of the NLCS back in October. The Phillies got two runs off of him and almost started a brawl on behalf of Chase Utley, who was hit by a pitch and tossed the ball back to Sanchez who didn’t like it. (Chase=bad ass, look it up)
The Phillies’ bats helped back Cliff last night and, hopefully, they can do the same for Vance. The Giants ARE NOT a hitting team. Their first time scoring 6 or more runs at home was earlier this week. How many times have the Phillies scored 6 or more runs in an inning? A lot. But tonight’s lineup doesn’t feature the big bats of the Phillies. Charlie’s switching it up against the lefty Sanchez, no Howard, no Chooch.
