Not Too Shabby, Cliff

" rel="bookmark">

For the second straight start in a row, Cliff Lee dazzled his opponent.  First, he shut out the Giants last Thursday, then tonight, he mastered the Dodgers through 8 scoreless innings en route to earning his 12th win of the year.  Lee also scored what would later be the game deciding run by depositing a ball in the right field stands for a home run off Ted Lilly in the 7th to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.  That run proved to be the factor as Ryan Madson couldn’t preserve the shut out.  Although allowing a run, the Mad Dog etched his 21st save in the books.

Once again, Cliff was unbe-LEE-vable in this start.  From the start, he was already switching up Dodger eye levels, and watching them whiff.  From attacking the zone with first pitch strikes to hooking in with his curve, it was just another great game to see unfold.  He struck out 10, only allowed 4 hits, and walked 2.  All within 124 pitches, 87 of which were strikes.

Let me talk about his home run for a second.  Wow, that thing got out fast!  It was his second of the year and second of his career.  Cliff is now batting .226, with 2 HR, and 7 RBIs.  Lee’s first career home run came exactly one month ago on July 9th when he took Tommy Hanson deep in the 3rd inning in a game that went 11 innings, resulting in a 4-1 Phillies’ loss.

With Cliff Lee in dominant form, and the rest of the team doing their part, the Phillies are now 36 games above the .500 mark.  They haven’t been that many games over .500 since ending the 1977 season 101-61.  The Phillies are now at a 76-40 record, reigning supreme above the rest of Major League Baseball. The Phillies are 8-1 on their 10-game road trip. If they win the series finale against the Dodgers tomorrow, it would be their best 10-game road trip and their third-best road trip of any length in franchise history.

We’re all part of this history.  Us here at The Phillies Blunt, the folks sitting on their couches watching the game, the fans who show up to Citizens Bank Park and those who travel up to 3,000 miles to catch a ball game, we’re all in this together.

Final: Phillies 2 – Dodgers 1.

Tomorrow afternoon, the Phillies will go for a sweep of the Dodgers to end out their road trip.  Vance Worely (8-1, 2.35 ERA) will take on Chad Billingsly (10-9, 4.17 ERA).  Both pitchers coming off of solid starts, and will have to duke it out.

First Pitch @ 3:10 PM ET

Let’s Go Phillies!
