Rebecca Black loves Fridays, Karl Weizein loves Fridays and so do we, here at The Phillies Blunt. Now, you can enjoy Fridays too because we proudly produce , a weekly roundup of things around the world of sports and pop-culture that we feel need to be revisited. So without further ado, let’s get right into the awards, shall we?
Mustache Of The WeekThis is Bill Simmons. If you don’t know who Bill is than let me school ya right quick. He hosts a sports and pop-culture podcast for ESPN called The B.S. Report. He also runs a blog with Chuck Klosterman called Grantland. He is all over the place, so chances are you’ve seen or heard him before, but if you haven’t and you like your sports news infused with a little humor and a lot of pop-culture references (and lets face it, if you’re reading this you probably do) then I highly recommend checking his work out. Earlier this week, Simmons guest hosted Pardon The Interruption, filling in for Tony Kornheiser, with Mike Wilbon. Tony and Mike are both facial hair sporters. Simmons, on the other hand, is usually clean shaven, but he must have felt left out because he grew this glorious lip-hugger for the occasion. I mean look at that thing. That thing is just good. Kinda ‘stache that says, “Hey ladies, this push broom is gonna sweep your basement.” Just beautiful.
Play Of The WeekThis little gem comes from the Royals-Tigers game last Saturday. Let’s break down what you’re seeing in this shot. Pitching is Justin Verlander. The home plate umpire is Philadelphia native Alan Porter. Between the two is a rocketing baseball that is destined for Porter’s little strike-caller. What makes this our play of the week (besides the fact that nut shots are always hilarious) is that we just plain don’t like Alan Porter. He may be from the area, but he tossed Charlie Manuel earlier this season, and his strike zone is whack. No amount of dancing with the Phanatic will make up for this. We’re glad Verlander just laughed at him afterwards instead of seeing if he was alright.
Phillie Of The WeekEveryone knows this guy, it’s the Krukster. But why, you ask, are we picking a guy who hasn’t played in Phillies pinstripes since the Vet was still our hellhole home, and the 700 level had as many rules as international waters as our Phillie of the week? Because today, August 12, John Kruk joins the Phillies Wall of Fame. Yes, Kruk joins the historic ranks of the likes of Darren Daulton, Richie Ashburn and Granny Hamner. In his career with the Phillies (1989-1994), John Kruk was a three-time All Star and hit over .300 in four seasons. While the numbers are certainly impressive, the best part about the Krukster was that he looked like the Krukster. When Chris Farley portrays you on SNL, then you know you don’t exactly look like an athlete, but Kruk had it all, and that’s why we loved him. Mullet, smoking in the dugout, beer gut, beard – yeah, sign me up for that first baseman.
Tweet Of The Week
We’ve learned a lot about our newest Phillie over the past couple weeks: solid fielder, great hitter, unorthodox to say the least, loves to eat and apparently loves to tweet. This tweet came up yesterday during an episode of Intentional Talk on the MLB Network. The baseball talk show, hosted by Chris Rose and Kevin Millar, was discussing who had a worst mustache between two ballplayers who aren’t Phillies so who cares who they were, and Hunter Pence tweeted into the show to add his two Pence (Ha, bad puns. Gotta love them.) Who is Domingo Ayala that Pence referenced? A character from a series of youtube clips making fun of baseball players. Watch them here. Can we just agree that Hunter Pence is the coolest mid-season acquisition of all time? Yeah? Okay, good.
So that’s all we ave for this week of . Hope you enjoyed. Tune in next week for a whole new batch of nonsense. If you have any Bluntie-worthy material you think should be up for consideration, don’t hesitate to tweet us, or drop us a line on the contact page.
