Little Roy Comes Up Big

" rel="bookmark">

Put together 6 runs + 5 hits+ 1 walk + a grand slam in 2/3 innings pitched and it will = a Ryan Madson blown save.

Now, put together eight hits + no earned runs + 1 walk + 9 strike outs through 8 innings pitched, and that = a Roy Oswalt gem.

Tonight was a great rebound for the Fightin’s, who seemed to have given up in last night’s game.  They scored 4 runs on 7 hits in the third inning and spanked one more hit out through out the rest of the game.  A 4-2 lead was what was given to Madson in the 9th, but we all know how that went.

Most of us woke up this morning saying “How the hell did that happen?”, or “Thank God I fell asleep before that happened.”

Whatever your thoughts were, you were not alone.  But luckily, there was something we could look forward to; tonight’s game.

Roy Oswalt made his second starts in a row, as he was credited with the start in last night’s rain delayed contest, but he would have to wait another night to toss the ball.  It didn’t seem to phase him, though, as he straight-up owned the Nationals tonight.  Throwing 115 pitches (82 for strikes), Little Roy licensed 8 hits, and walked only 1, and refused a run to cross the plate.  Oh yeah, he also struck out 9 batters.  That’s the most he’s ever fanned in a Phillies uniform.  Roy’s record is crawling closer to .500 after tonights start as he is now 6-7,  with a 3.51 ERA.  If Little Roy can be as dominant for the remainder of the season as he was tonight, three aces could become four again. (Or 5 if you count Worley, which we totally do.)

The Phillies’ bats also played a huge roll tonight.  After blacking out halfway through last night’s game, the Fightin’s bats awoke tonight in the 4th.  Wilson Valdez put the Phillies on the board first with an RBI triple that scored Mayberry Jr. and Chooch.  After a slight hiatus, the bats would continue to rattle with a Hunter Pence led off solo shot in the 6th inning, his 15th of the year.  Two singles, and a sacrifice bunt led to a Jimmy Rollins RBI single that drove in 2.  That would be all Oswalt would need, as he cruised along.  Mike Stutes came on to finish it off, he threw a 1-2-3 9th inning to seal the deal for the Phillies their 81st win of the year.

81-43 is a great record.  Seriously it’s great.  There are 38 games left in the season and there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.  The Phillies lead the Braves by 7 1/2 games in the NL East and their magic number is down to 30.  It’s crazy how good this team is.

Tomorrow, we all get a chance to move one (or two) up in the win column.  Doc is pitching.

Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.53 ERA) will go for his 16th win as he goes toe-to-toe with Chien-Ming Wang (2-2, 4.22 ERA).  Doc threw a great game in his last outing, striking out a career high tying 14.  He got a tough loss as the Dbacks powered back to take the lead in the 9th.  And Wang, well that’s another story for another day (i.e. tomorrow).  Tomorrow’s first pitch is at 1:35 PM ET.

As for tonight, another W in the column sends us all to sleep happy.  It’s only going to get funner.

Final: Phillies win 5-0.
