Oswalt Gets Slammed, Phillies Fall In Opener

" rel="bookmark">

That was not quite the series opener we were looking forward to.

Coming off a 7-4 loss Wednesday, the Phillies looked to head into the weekend, even if they play only one game, with a win.  Roy Oswalt was on the hill for the Phillies, coming off of a great 8 scoreless inning outing against Washington.  It wasn’t hard to tell from the start that Roy’s fastball didn’t have the same zip it had last Saturday.  He allowed 12 hits, 6 runs, 5 of them earned,  and all through just 5 2/3 innings.  John Buck’s grand slam sealed the deal for the Marlins, as it was that home run that would hold the lead.

The long ball proved worthy tonight.  Wilson Valdez cranked out his first of the year, and the sixth of his career.  Rhyno, well he did what he usually does when he gets a hold of one, he took it to town.  This time it was a three-run bomb to right center field.  It was Rhyno’s 34th career home run vs the Marlins.  Howard now sits with 99 RBIs on then year, holding second place in the NL.  Prince Fielder entered tonight’s game with 100.  As of 10:45 PM ET, he has 101 RBIs.

The bombs didn’t do enough, however, as the Phils  headed into the 9th down 6-4.  The Phillies did’t go down with out a fight though.  Raul pinch hit for a single, and on came Cliff Lee to run for him.  Yes, this guy can run.  He scored on Mini Mart’s RBI double.  With the Phillies scoring a run, it left Victorino and Polly with a man on second.  Nothing more was to come of the inning, however, as the Phillies went down easily in the end to lose the opener.  The Phillies would leave 10 men on base tonight.

Tomorrow, there is a lot going on with this Hurricane Irene. It wasn’t supposed to hit North Carolina as early as expected.  With tomorrow’s second game of the planned double-header canceled, Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.56 ERA) will take on Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 4.01 ERA) at 1:05 PM ET.  It’s still unclear if this game will get finished, let alone started.

To everybody headed out there tomorrow, be safe and cautious.

Final: Marlins 6, Phillies 5.

Let’s Go Phillies!
