During this four-game series, the Phillies have already taken three games by storm. Thursday, Cliff Lee mastered the Giants in a complete game shut out 3-0 win. Friday, the Vanimal shut down the reigning World Champions, even after an altercation, and still pulled up the 9-2 win. Yesterday, Cole Hamels was fantastic, throwing 8 2/3 shut out innings, before giving up a solo shot in the 9th. He pulled it together and got the complete game 2-1 win. Today, it’s Little Roy’s turn to have some fun.
Today, Roy Oswalt (4-6, 3.79 ERA) will make his return to the mound for the Phillies as he goes against the Giants. It will be Oswalt’s first start since June 23rd, where he went 2 innings, allowed 4 earned runs on 5 hits, and recorded 1 strikeout against the Cardinals. He was pulled early from that game due to “tightness in his lower back.” Well, that “tightness” turned out to be lower back inflammation and two bulging disks, which resulted in him to stay on the DL for six weeks. Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35 ERA) filled in for the righty and since Oswalt left the rotation, Worley has started 8 games for the Phillies, holding an ERA of 1.80 while logging 7 or more innings in 5 of those appearances. After weeks of rehab appearances and bullpen sessions, it’s time for Little Roy to get back on the hill and rejoin the party.
The Phillies are on a current 9 game winning streak and are aiming for 10. While on that streak, the Phillies have won 12 of their last 13 series. During this streak, the Phillies are batting .293 with 38 extra-base hits, have a 2.39 ERA and have outscored their opponents 53-24. The Giants have lost 8 of their last 9 since taking 2 of 3 in Philadelphia last week.
Today, Roy Oswalt will take on the Giants’ Ace Tim Lincecum (9-9, 2.77 ERA). Lincecum is coming off a hard loss in Arizona where he threw 7 innings and only allowed 2 runs. On July 28th, he threw 6 shut out innings, letting by just 3 hits, while walking 4 Phillies in the Giants’ 4-1 win. Timmy is a career 3-1 with a 2.82 ERA vs the Phillies. Roy Oswalt is a career 6-8 with a 3.61 ERA vs the Giants.
Injury Notes: Placido Polanco was pulled from the game yesterday with what appears to be a sore left hip. He said it had nothing to do with Eli Whiteside and had bothering him for a month.
