Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It

So the world appears to be coming to an end, but at least we can go out watching the Phillies.  Tonight, we start what is supposed to be a three-game series against the Florida Marlins.  Originally, the games were scheduled for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, but with Mother Nature on her period, Sunday’s game was moved to Saturday afternoon.  That game might get in, but Saturday night’s game is unlikely at best.  Tonight, however, we should get to see some baseball.

Hey remember way back in June when the Marlins were threatening to have a competitive season?  Remember, they were playing good baseball and actually winning games?  Nah, me either.  Tonight, Roy Oswalt (6-7, 3.51 ERA) leads the Fightin’s in a fishing expedition in the friendly waters of Citizen’s Bank Park.  (Oh yeah, with the threats of flooding in the Illadelph I’ll try to avoid mentioning water.)  Roy O seems to have knocked off the rust of an extended DL stint as he had a rather impressive outing last Saturday against the Washington Nationals where he threw eight scoreless innings, struck out nine, allowed eight hits and walked only one.  The Wiz had good command, and more importantly, his velocity was back.  It’s an encouraging sign.  Oswalt hasn’t had as stellar a year as he is accustomed to, but he has battled through injuries, and seems to be ready for the late-season push to the playoffs.

Throwing for the Marlins is right hander, Clay Hensley.  Hensley (1-5, 5.47 ERA) had spent the majority of his time with the Marlins in the bullpen, but with an injury to their ace Josh Johnson, Hensley was pushed into the starting rotation.  As his 1-5 record would seem to indicate, it hasn’t been a great time for Hensley in the starter’s role.  In his last start, Clay Hensley got pounded by the Padres (insert your own joke about the Catholic Church here) to the tune of seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings pitched.

So, while we might die this weekend in the stormy gusts of Hurricane Irene, at least we’ll get a little Phillies in too.

Let’s Go Phillies!

Oswalt Gets Slammed, Phillies Fall In Opener

" rel="bookmark">

That was not quite the series opener we were looking forward to.

Coming off a 7-4 loss Wednesday, the Phillies looked to head into the weekend, even if they play only one game, with a win.  Roy Oswalt was on the hill for the Phillies, coming off of a great 8 scoreless inning outing against Washington.  It wasn’t hard to tell from the start that Roy’s fastball didn’t have the same zip it had last Saturday.  He allowed 12 hits, 6 runs, 5 of them earned,  and all through just 5 2/3 innings.  John Buck’s grand slam sealed the deal for the Marlins, as it was that home run that would hold the lead.

The long ball proved worthy tonight.  Wilson Valdez cranked out his first of the year, and the sixth of his career.  Rhyno, well he did what he usually does when he gets a hold of one, he took it to town.  This time it was a three-run bomb to right center field.  It was Rhyno’s 34th career home run vs the Marlins.  Howard now sits with 99 RBIs on then year, holding second place in the NL.  Prince Fielder entered tonight’s game with 100.  As of 10:45 PM ET, he has 101 RBIs.

The bombs didn’t do enough, however, as the Phils  headed into the 9th down 6-4.  The Phillies did’t go down with out a fight though.  Raul pinch hit for a single, and on came Cliff Lee to run for him.  Yes, this guy can run.  He scored on Mini Mart’s RBI double.  With the Phillies scoring a run, it left Victorino and Polly with a man on second.  Nothing more was to come of the inning, however, as the Phillies went down easily in the end to lose the opener.  The Phillies would leave 10 men on base tonight.

Tomorrow, there is a lot going on with this Hurricane Irene. It wasn’t supposed to hit North Carolina as early as expected.  With tomorrow’s second game of the planned double-header canceled, Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.56 ERA) will take on Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 4.01 ERA) at 1:05 PM ET.  It’s still unclear if this game will get finished, let alone started.

To everybody headed out there tomorrow, be safe and cautious.

Final: Marlins 6, Phillies 5.

Let’s Go Phillies!

Doc Hopes To Meets Marlins Before Irene Hits

" rel="bookmark">

I personally don’t think this game is going to be finished if it gets started.  It is raining hard here in Jersey, but I don’t know what the deal in Philly is.

Today, Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.56 ERA) will take on the Marlins in what was to be game one of a double header.  After word that Hurricane Irene was inbound, the Phillies canceled game two tonight and Cliff Lee’s start was pushed back.  Doc had his last start cut short because of rain. He allowed 7 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 5 through 5 innings, before headed into a rain delay.  It may seem the same for him today.  He has a career 4-3, 2.47 ERA vs the Marlins in his career.

Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 4.01 ERA) will deal on the hill for the Marlins, trying to end up with a decision. In his last start, he took a no-decision, giving up 3 runs in 5 innings.  He has a career 3-7, 5.67 ERA vs the Phillies, but has found a week spot in the line up before.  Back on June 15th, he yielded 2 earned runs in 7 innings in a no-decision.

If this hurricane stops the game, I won’t be surprised.  It has already swept away a boardwalk in North Carolina.

To all the folks headed to the ballpark today, be safe and have fun.

First Pitch @ 1:05 PM!

Today’s Lineup:

1. Victorino CF
2. Polly 3B
3. Chutts 2B
4. Rhyno 1B
5. Pence RF
6. Mayberry LF
7. Chooch C
8. Wilsonnnn SS
9. Doc P.

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke
That Was Very Entertaining…Whatever
It’s been nearly a week since I’ve been able to sit down, watch a whole Phillies game, and write about it.  I am off from work until Friday and I still get to watch that game.
Just like Heaven.
To add to my nice little two-day vacation, the Phillies absolutely skinned the D-backs tonight to kill Arizona’s seven-game winning streak.
Cliff Lee earned his 13th win of the season tonight as he held the D-backs to just 2 runs on 3 hits, over 7 innings.  His only runs allowed were from a two-run dinger in the 2nd.  It was smooth sailing from there for the Phifer, as he only allowed 2 more hits and walked a couple batters. None of those would  score however.  Lee was solid tonight, his line: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.  Throwing just 99 pitches, he was pulled from the game in the bottom of the 7th inning in order for a pinch hitter.  That pinch hitter, Ben Francisco, sac flied and added to the mayhem that the Phillies had already started to unleash on the D-backs.
That outburst of runs was the “fun part” of the story tonight.  Joe Saunders and Cliff Lee matched well tonight, but in the 7th,  Wilson Valdez opened the gates with a 2-run double that gave the Phillies a 4-2 lead and led to the D-backs bullpen.  The Phils went on to tack 5 more runs throughout the 7th and 8th innings en route to their 9-2 win, their 79th of the season.  Even though tonight’s lineup didn’t show up until the late innings, they did their job.
John Mayberry Jr. went 3-4 with an RBI.  Hunter Pence went 2-2, 2 BB, and scored 3 of the 9 runs.  Certainly a bounce back offensive performance from last night’s heart breaker.  Chase was the only starter (besides Cliff Lee) to not get a hit.
Bummer?
Yes, Chase is now batting .279 after going 0-5 tonight.  Cliff didn’t go deep nor did he get on base (well he did, but got screwed by Brian Welke).
It’s really fun when you pound on the same team that beat you by one run the night before.
Whatever.
Tomorrow night, in the series finale, Vance Worley (8-1, 2.85 ERA) and Ian Kennedy (15-3, 3.12 ERA) will go toe-to-toe.
Worley is coming off one of the worst starts of his career, against the Dodgers.  He allowed 6 earned runs over 4 innings.  Kennedy is searching to continue his career year, as he’s won his last seven starts.  He allowed 1 earned run over 7 innings against the Mets last Friday.
Final: Phillies win 9-2.

The Vanimal Will Be Stalking The D-backs For His Next Feeding

" rel="bookmark">

Last night, Cliff Lee earned his 13th game of the year.

Tonight, the Vanimal is going for his 9th.

Vance Worley (8-1, 2.85 ERA) will take on the D-backs.  Vance’s last start proved to be a a short outing that ended up in a no-decision, but a Phillies win over the Dodgers.  He threw 4 innings, yielding 6 earned runs on 7 hits, issuing free passes to three, while K-ing 6.  The Phillies would end up coming back from a 6-0 deficit to win 9-8, en route to capping off their best 10-game road trip in franchise history.  Even with his bad outing, the Rec-Spec’d Wonder is ready to bounce back.

“I got tagged,” Worley said. “I’m human.”

Just because he’s human doesn’t mean he can’t become dominant again.

Arizona’s ace, Ian Kennedy (15-3, 3.12 ERA) will take the hill for the D-backs.  In his last seven starts he has pulled out a win.  In his last start, Kennedy tossed 7 strong innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, walked 3, and struck out 5 Mets.  Kennedy has proven to be the “ace” of the D-backs.  His 15-3 record sports a .853 winning percentage, a Major League leading mark.  Kennedy has been in talks of contention for the NL Cy Young Award.

Sorry kid.  Even though you’re pitching great this year, you still have a lot of guys to beat out.

Last night,  Ryan Howard swung his lumber and seemed to be in pain.  He went down into the clubhouse after his at-bat, but returned to finish the game.  No word as to what’s ailing the big piece, but as a piece of wild speculation let’s say it may be an oblique strain.  Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz are not in the lineup tonight, but Charlie Manuel said they are available if needed.

Those two won’t be alone on the bench tonight, either, as Shane Victorino will begin to serve his suspension for his roll in a bench clearing brawl with the Giants back on August 5th.  He was initially supposed to receive a three game suspension, but after appealing it, the mandatory vacation was cut to two games.  The fact that he is being suspended and Eli Whiteside isn’t, still continues to bewilder most in the Phillies Nation.  All the major parties concerned with the brawl received fines of an undisclosed amount,  but the Flyin’ Hawaiian was the only one suspended.

With Polanco, Victorino, and Howard not in the lineup, the Phillies’ bench players will have to come up big.  John Mayberry Jr. is batting .263 with 9 HR and 32 RBI.  Either Wilson Valdez or Michael Martinez will fill in for Polly at the hot corner, while Ross Gload will take over first base for the Big Piece. Brian Schneider will fill in for Carlos Ruiz behind the plate.  Chooch took a foul ball right to the little Chooches Tuesday night.  He has been diagnosed with a “left testicle contusion” and should be ready for the weekend series with the Nationals.  As stated earlier, he is available if needed.

Tonight’s game may be the last time the Phillies play the D-backs until October.  Arizona sits 2 1/2 games above San Francisco  in the NL West, while the Braves lead the NL Wild Card.  The Phillies have lost only one of 15 series since June 17-19 in Seattle and Worley will try to keep that run intact.

The D-backs lead the Phillies in their season series 4-3.  Let’s get to .500 against the snakes!

First Pitch @ 7:05 PM!

Tonight’s Lineup:

1. J Roll SS
2. Mayberry Jr. CF
3. Chutts 2B
4. Pence RF
5. Rauuul LF
6. Gload 1B
7. The Schneid-inator C
8. Valdez 3B
9. Vanimal P

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

Eighty Wins…You Heard?

Yeah you heard it, 80 wins.  That’s swag.

Okay enough rambling, it’s late, so let’s treat you all quickly.

Tonight’s game showed that Mother Nature screwed the Vanimal from feeding on his prey.

Vance Worley was searching for his 9th win of the season tonight, and he was cruising along pretty smoothly through the first three innings.  He only threw 30 pitches (23 of them strikes), yielding 1 hit, and struck out 2 before he was halted by the rain.  It’s a shame that the Vanimal’s start was cut short.  It looked like he was sure to go deep into the game, possibly a complete game.  His counter part, Ian Kennedy had a different trip tonight.  In three innings, he allowed 3 earned runs on just 5 hits.  In the bottom of the 3rd, John Mayberry Jr. took him deep off of the left field foul pole for a two-run home run.  That’s all the boys in red pinstripes would need.

For two hours and seventeen minutes puddles filled Citizens Bank Park.  The tarps finally came off of the field around 10:20 PM.  David Herndon resumed the game on the hill, and he did his job…and did it damn well: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 K.  From there, the Stutes-Bastardo-Madson train would chug along, yet again.  But back to Herndon; he was phenomenal.  His solid three innings earned him his first win of the season.  He also our “Player Of the Game Award” (don’t expect a trophy in the mail, Herndon).

Madson threw a 1-2-3 9th to seal the deal for the Phillies, who won their 80th game of the year.  It took 122 games for the Phils to get to 80 wins, one shy of their record in 1976 (121 games).  We are certainly on the right path to October.

Tomorrow, the Phils head to Washington for a weekend series.  Roy Oswalt (5-7, 3.84 ERA) will take on Livan Hernandez (7-11, 4.21 ERA) in the series opener.

Hope you all enjoyed the quick post, now off to bed.

Final: Phillies win 4-1.

Who Really Is The Boss?

" rel="bookmark">

Tony Danza?  No.

Judith Light?  Absolutely not.

Alyssa Milano?  Well kinda, but not in this case.

“The Boss” that I’m referring to is none other than Charlie Manuel.  Good ole Uncle Cholly, the man who has done his part in turning this team around from being cellar dwellers to being on the top.  Yes, Ed Wade, Pat Gillick, Ruben Amaro and even Larry Bowa did their part, but it takes someone truly special to put the talent in the right direction, and Charlie Manuel has done that.

The numbers speak for themselves.  Since being named the skipper of the Phillies, Chuck has compiled a 624-470 record.  He sits just 22 games behind Phillies’ all-time leader in managerial wins, Gene Mauch (646-684).  Mauch managed the Fightin’s for eight years (1960-1968), sporting a .486 win percentage.  Charlie has been managing his club for six years, and he doesn’t show signs of letting up.  Hell, with a club as powerful as this, who would want to retire?

The man has taken this club to the postseason four straight times since 2007, and honestly, that’s not what we all expected when he first arrived.  Admit it, we all thought “Oh Christ, here comes this bumbling moron who can’t speak right.  We’re going to sit in the dumps forever.”  Well my friends, the tables have turned.

We won the World Series in 2008 due, in most part, to our offense, and that is vintage Charlie.  Chuck is a big fan of hitting; he loves to watch, talk, teach, and do just about everything you could think of about hitting.  The guy loves hitting.  Absolutely loves it.  Did I mention that he loves hitting and everything that has to do with hitting?  If Pee-wee Herman were here he’d say to to Charlie, “If you love hitting so much, then why don’t you marry it?”

And Charlie would.

Now, the emphasis for the Phils is on pitching.  Sure, it’s not as fun as hitting, but our dream rotation has racked up 80 wins thus far for the Phillies, and that seems to be okay with Charlie too.  The Phillies have the best record in baseball, and have for nearly two months, it’s important to remember that it’s Charlie steering that has pointed the ship toward fall.  The Phils sit comfortably atop the lead in the NL East, and appear to be a shoe in for the postseason.  The offense, the defense and the pitching all have come together, but there are still 40 games left, and the boys in red pinstripes need to stay on task.  Chuck has to make things work even with a nice lead.  Rest some, get other’s some plate appearances, and yet, keep the boys in a competitive mindset so that they do not become to complacent as playoffs roll around.  It’s a delicate balance, but one that Charlie has managed before.

As the dog days of summer die down and the crisp of fall enters the air, it will remind us all that playoff baseball is coming soon.  Strap in for the end of the season, and trust in Charlie.  He can handle it, he’s The Boss.

Last week we had our first ever “Mustache Of The Week.”  As a bit of a mustache aficionado, I was really looking forward to gracing the pages of the Blunt with ‘stachey gloriousness, but after this beaut, I’m afraid there won’t be another.  This Phils fan was spotted in between innings by the Phillies broadcast team during Friday’s game against the Nationals.  I don’t know much about this guy, but I do know that I want to be his friend in the worst way.  I assume he drives a Harley, and would constantly tell me what it was like in ‘Nam, but I’d deal with that if he would let me touch this cotton candy twister just once.  There may be some debate as to whether or not this is technically a mustache, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt.  He’s a Phillies fan, and it is epic. So here it is folks, the last mustache of the week….probably.

Play Of The Week

This is a no brainer.  It’s a milestone 600th home run for former-Phillie Jim Thome.  Thome became the 8th member of the exclusive 600 dinger club, and made it there at the second fastest pace, behind only Babe Ruth.  What really pushed this play over the top as our Play of the Week was the fact the Jim Thome is a genuinely great guy by all accounts.  You would have never seen us covering A-Hole’s 600th home run last year.  And what’s more, when Thome was asked if there was any coach that had the most influence in his illustrious bomb hitting career he answered, “Charlie Manuel, no question.”  Well Mr. Thome, well played.  Well played indeed.  You just earned yourself a Bluntie.  I’m sure it will sit prominently on your shelf with all your other hardware.

Side Note:  We here in Philly have always loved Jim Thome, from his days in CBP and even when he moved on.  So we may not be the classiest people, but at least we can recognize class, and applaud it.  People will debate whether or not Thome deserves to be in the Hall of Fame after he retires (which he does) but one thing is clear, Jim Thome is a Hall of Fame person.  Something he cares more about anyways.

Phillie Of The Week

So you want to be a Major League catcher?  Well then try these words on for size:  testicular contusion.  In case you’re not a doctor, that means bruised nut, ball, man-berry, what have you.  That’s what Chooch was diagnosed with after taking a pitch from Roy Halladay in Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks square of his (big) little Choochers.  Chooch has taken some time off from his duties behind the plate, while his Panamanian huevos recuperate, and we’d say he earned the days off.  We all love Chooch (how could you not) so while not everything is going Ruiz’s way, we figured we’d throw him this bluntie.  Actually, throwing it might not be a good idea, so we’ll gently place it down and let him pick it up himself.  Gotta watch out for the goods so Carlos can produce more children which he will inevitably just name Carlos.

Tweet Of The Week

The Phillies train ride down to D.C. last night must have been extremely boring because Jimmy Rollins went on a twitter tear.  He tweeted on everything from Jim Thome’s 600th home run (in which he referred to Thome as his “big homie”) to the rapper Game’s (he dropped the “The”) new album in which, apparently, the rapper name drops Roy Halladay.  There was some confusion at first when JRoll said that Doc was on the new album.  ”Doc rapping?” everyone jested, but Jimmy cleared the air with this definitive response.  Using Doc’s name in a rhyme: okay, but Doc actually spitting truth over beats: now that’s something I’d pay top dollar for.  A boy can dream.

Little Roy Comes Up Big

" rel="bookmark">

Put together 6 runs + 5 hits+ 1 walk + a grand slam in 2/3 innings pitched and it will = a Ryan Madson blown save.

Now, put together eight hits + no earned runs + 1 walk + 9 strike outs through 8 innings pitched, and that = a Roy Oswalt gem.

Tonight was a great rebound for the Fightin’s, who seemed to have given up in last night’s game.  They scored 4 runs on 7 hits in the third inning and spanked one more hit out through out the rest of the game.  A 4-2 lead was what was given to Madson in the 9th, but we all know how that went.

Most of us woke up this morning saying “How the hell did that happen?”, or “Thank God I fell asleep before that happened.”

Whatever your thoughts were, you were not alone.  But luckily, there was something we could look forward to; tonight’s game.

Roy Oswalt made his second starts in a row, as he was credited with the start in last night’s rain delayed contest, but he would have to wait another night to toss the ball.  It didn’t seem to phase him, though, as he straight-up owned the Nationals tonight.  Throwing 115 pitches (82 for strikes), Little Roy licensed 8 hits, and walked only 1, and refused a run to cross the plate.  Oh yeah, he also struck out 9 batters.  That’s the most he’s ever fanned in a Phillies uniform.  Roy’s record is crawling closer to .500 after tonights start as he is now 6-7,  with a 3.51 ERA.  If Little Roy can be as dominant for the remainder of the season as he was tonight, three aces could become four again. (Or 5 if you count Worley, which we totally do.)

The Phillies’ bats also played a huge roll tonight.  After blacking out halfway through last night’s game, the Fightin’s bats awoke tonight in the 4th.  Wilson Valdez put the Phillies on the board first with an RBI triple that scored Mayberry Jr. and Chooch.  After a slight hiatus, the bats would continue to rattle with a Hunter Pence led off solo shot in the 6th inning, his 15th of the year.  Two singles, and a sacrifice bunt led to a Jimmy Rollins RBI single that drove in 2.  That would be all Oswalt would need, as he cruised along.  Mike Stutes came on to finish it off, he threw a 1-2-3 9th inning to seal the deal for the Phillies their 81st win of the year.

81-43 is a great record.  Seriously it’s great.  There are 38 games left in the season and there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.  The Phillies lead the Braves by 7 1/2 games in the NL East and their magic number is down to 30.  It’s crazy how good this team is.

Tomorrow, we all get a chance to move one (or two) up in the win column.  Doc is pitching.

Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.53 ERA) will go for his 16th win as he goes toe-to-toe with Chien-Ming Wang (2-2, 4.22 ERA).  Doc threw a great game in his last outing, striking out a career high tying 14.  He got a tough loss as the Dbacks powered back to take the lead in the 9th.  And Wang, well that’s another story for another day (i.e. tomorrow).  Tomorrow’s first pitch is at 1:35 PM ET.

As for tonight, another W in the column sends us all to sleep happy.  It’s only going to get funner.

Final: Phillies win 5-0.

The Doc Is In The District

" rel="bookmark">

The Phillies are on quest to continue one of their best streaks in ages, as they haven’t lost a series in over two months.  That streak is on the line today, but there’s no need to fret, Doc is on the hill.

Roy Halladay (15-5, 2.53 ERA) will face the Nationals yet again. The good doctor is 11-1, with a 2.21 ERA against the Nats in his career.  Those numbers speak for themselves.  Plus, the Nats have to worry about Doc coming off a loss.  He doesn’t like to lose.  In his last outing Halladay threw a great complete game, holding Arizona to just 1 run through 8, but still got tagged with the L as he let up a pair of runs in the 9th.  Forget that crap, though, it’s a new start and a new day and Doc doesn’t care what happened in the past. The Phillies and Doc are in the Capital, and what ever the circumstances are, Doc always seems to have control in Washington.

His counterpart for the contest will be Chien-Ming Wang (2-2, 4.22 ERA).  Wang, who has suffered right arm ailments (and jokes about his name) throughout his career has faced Halladay before, back in the American League.  Wang is coming off of a 6 1/3 inning outing, where he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits.  In his long career (mostly in the AL), he has only thrown 3 innings against the Fightins, racking up a 6.00 ERA and 2 strike outs.

Last night, the Phils scored 5 runs in the game and were able to maintain the shutout.  The Phillies who have faced Wang, have mostly been able to hit him.  Raul Ibanez has a career .222 avg against him in 18 AB, with 1 HR and 3 RBIs.  Ben Francisco is batting a career .600 against him, while Ross Gload sports a .556 mark with 2 RBIs.  Chase Utley and Shane Victorino both have .500 averages against him.  With these positive numbers, the Phils should have no hard task in scoring runs for Doc.

Fun Fact: The Phillies are 22-13 all time at Nationals Park, and have won 8 of the first 11 series played there.

Today’s First Pitch @ 1:35 PM!

Today’s Lineup:

1. J Roll SS
2. Victorino CF
3. Chutts 2B
4. Rhyno 1B
5. Pence RF
6. Rauuuul LF
7. Chooch C
8. Mini Mart 3B
9. Doc P.

Is it October Yet?

" rel="bookmark">

It’s a privilege. It really is. Sitting here on top of the NL East, and looking back at the rest of the league. Stuck in our rearview mirror are the once rivaled Mets. The Jayson Werth led Nationals are far from making the playoffs. Even the Fish who once gave us fits have floundered. The only real competish is Atlanta who we could end up seeing in the playoffs eventually, but as of right now they sit 6.5 games behind us.

It’s comfortable up here. It’s easier now, in the twilight of August, just before the dawn of September, to give up late leads and blow a game. We’ve seen it happen twice this weekend. That’s why I ask,

We’ve heard that statement before. We’ve all thought it. While it’s never boring to watch the Phils, it does get redundant. It’s a weird paradox. I always wanted the Phillies to make the playoffs when I was younger. Gone now are the days when the Phillies’ destiny was in their own hands and maybe they had a shot at the wild card. Gone too are the days when the Mets would produce an epic collapse and the Fightins would steal a division crown from off their heads. Yes, the playing field has changed, and everyone else has to look up the hill at the Phillies.

I know a lot of the fans feel the same way that I do. We want to watch some games that have meaning, some real excitement. We all want that nervousness back in our stomachs. Those playoff butterflies that give you chills when Howard steps to the plate in a tough spot late in a game. We have a little over a month until those feelings return.

So the real question is, what can we do until then?

Let’s all just hope that the Phillies don’t make it interesting down the stretch. We all want them to cruise into the playoffs with a healthy lineup, rotation, and bullpen. I know most of us don’t need more reasons to be pumped for the playoffs, but in this final month here are some things that you can do to prepare for a second parade in 3 years.

1. Stop shaving. I know, it’s crazy right? It’s something that I do every year for the Flyers. Once the playoffs start, you don’t shave. Grow out those playoff beards. In May and June though, they get hot. It gets itchy and long and you just have to grin and bare it. But in October? The wind starts to pick up and anyone willing to grow a playoff beard for the Phils will have their very own insulation on their chin. It’s like a sweater for your face! The last time I grew a playoff beard in October? The year was 2008. We all know what happened then.

2. Speaking of 2008, to get extra pumped, you need to pop in your DVD entitled A Perfect Season: the Phillies 2008 yearbook. I know everyone owns it already but if for some crazy reason you don’t, go right now to Amazon or to the phillies.com store and buy 6 copies. You never know when you’ll need to put that on. It’s the perfect way to get in the right mood for the upcoming playoffs. You can also buy MLB’s official DVD for the 2008 World Series if you like listening to Joe Buck. I like to watch mine on mute.

3. This is probably the most important step of all. We need Hunter Pence to grow out a playoff stache. Hungry recently posted this to his twitter:

Now all I want is to see him with a stache. A handlebar mustache. We all need to take to our twitter’s and get Hunter to grow one helluva a playoff stache. This is the third step to get ready for the playoffs, to get Hunter Pence to grow a playoff mustache. I think that was an open invitation to keep on him until he grows it out. The day that Hunter Pence trots onto the field, rocking a handlebar mustache is the start of a domino effect to a World Series parade.

So there you have it. Three easy things to get you ready for October. Sure there are plenty other things you can do to get ready, such as: shave your head into a Phillies P, make brownies, get black out drunk for a month straight and before you know it: playoffs!, sacrifice your first born to the baseball gods, paint yourself Phillies red, don’t cut your hair, attend the Philadelphia Zoo, bake a Phillies cake and eat it all by yourself, go to every other stadium of playoff caliber teams in the league and put a hex on their ballpark. I will personally be doing the last option.

So now that you’re ready for the playoffs, you no longer need to ask,

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

14 Wins For Lee As Phils’ Bats Bombard Mets

Start playing High Hopes, guy who controls the Phanavision scoreboard.  The Phillies have taken game one by force.

Cliff was, yet again, amazing tonight as he continued his season dominance over the Mets.  He yielded just 3 hits, allowed no runs, walked 3, and struck out 7 to produce his 14th win of the year, and the Phillies’ 82nd win.  Lee wasn’t the only one who had a great game, though, as his offense was also brilliant.  Cliff Lee has received a ton of run support in his past two starts, 19 runs to be exact.  The Phillies’ bats racked up 10 runs on 11 hits tonight, and 8 of those runs come in the first four innings.

This lineup is hot, whether it be starters or bench players, these bats are working as one.  John Mayberry Jr. went deep in the 3rd for a two-run bomb, scoring Hunter Pence.  Three innings later, Hunter Pence would take one deep himself, a two-run bomb as well.  High scoring and Cliff pitching is a winning combination for the Fightin’s.

With an 82-44 record, the Phillies’ magic number is now 29.

Tomorrow’s game is at 7:05 PM ET!

It’s a Vance recital tomorrow as Worley (8-1, 2.76 ERA) will take on Jon Niese (11-10, 4.05 ERA).  Vance pitched well in his last outing but a rain delay cut his day short after 3 innings.  Niese had a quality start in his last outing, but didn’t get the win because he plays for the Mets.

Final: Phillies win 10-0.

Vanimal Called To Finish Sweep

" rel="bookmark">

This has been a road trip to remember.  In the nine games thus far, the Phillies have lost only one.  They swept of the Rockies, took three of four from the Giants, and now, the Phillies look to complete a three game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.  With an 8-1 record in the past week and a half, the Phils have moved 36 games over .500, something that they hasn’t been done on Philadelphia since the end of the 1977 season.  It was never done in ’80 or ’08 as the Phillies won the World Series.  This could be the best team in Phillies history.  We are truly luck.

As for today, the Phillies look to win just one more game.  To do that, Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35 ERA) will need to continue in the footsteps of Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee who took the first two from the Dodgers.  While Worley may be our number five man, he has been pitching like an ace for most of the season.  In his last start, against the San Francisco Giants last Friday, Vance may not have made the headlines, (that honor goes to the bench clearing brawl) but he did pitch fantastically.  The God of Worley went seven strong innings, allowed seven hits, two runs, and walked one while striking out six in an effort that earned him his 8th win of the season.  Vance may not win the Rookie Of The Year Award, but he is, at least, making his name known as great young player.

As for the Dodgers, today they throw Chad Billingsley (10-9, 4.17 ERA) to try and stage off the sweep.  With a quality start in his last outing against the Diamondbacks, Billingsley earned his 10th win of the season, and continued a streak of double digit wins for the past five season.  While Billingsley is certainly a quality-start kind of pitcher, he is no way overwhelming.  Rather, the 27 year-old righty is the type of pitcher who grinds, and keeps his team in the game.  In his career against the Phillies, Billingsley holds a 2-1 record and a 3.19 ERA.

There will be runs against the Dodgers.  Now, it will just be up to the Vanimal to do his thing and keep LA off the board.  If the Phillies win today, they will have gone 9-1 on this road trip.  That will be the best 10-game road trip in franchise history.

Let’s go Phillies!

Today’s Starting 9:

3. Chut 2B

The Blunties

" rel="bookmark">

Rebecca Black loves Fridays, Karl Weizein loves Fridays and so do we, here at The Phillies Blunt.  Now, you can enjoy Fridays too because we proudly produce , a weekly roundup of things around the world of sports and pop-culture that we feel need to be revisited.  So without further ado, let’s get right into the awards, shall we?

Mustache Of The Week

This is Bill Simmons.  If you don’t know who Bill is than let me school ya right quick.  He hosts a sports and pop-culture podcast for ESPN called The B.S. Report.  He also runs a blog with Chuck Klosterman called Grantland.  He is all over the place, so chances are you’ve seen or heard him before, but if you haven’t and you like your sports news infused with a little humor and a lot of pop-culture references (and lets face it, if you’re reading this you probably do) then I highly recommend checking his work out.  Earlier this week, Simmons guest hosted Pardon The Interruption, filling in for Tony Kornheiser, with Mike Wilbon.  Tony and Mike are both facial hair sporters.  Simmons, on the other hand, is usually clean shaven, but he must have felt left out because he grew this glorious lip-hugger for the occasion.  I mean look at that thing.  That thing is just good.  Kinda ‘stache that says, “Hey ladies, this push broom is gonna sweep your basement.”  Just beautiful.

Play Of The Week

This little gem comes from the Royals-Tigers game last Saturday.  Let’s break down what you’re seeing in this shot.  Pitching is Justin Verlander.  The home plate umpire is Philadelphia native Alan Porter.  Between the two is a rocketing baseball that is destined for Porter’s little strike-caller.  What makes this our play of the week (besides the fact that nut shots are always hilarious) is that we just plain don’t like Alan Porter.  He may be from the area, but he tossed Charlie Manuel earlier this season, and his strike zone is whack.  No amount of dancing with the Phanatic will make up for this.  We’re glad Verlander just laughed at him afterwards instead of seeing if he was alright.

Phillie Of The Week

Everyone knows this guy, it’s the Krukster.  But why, you ask, are we picking a guy who hasn’t played in Phillies pinstripes since the Vet was still our hellhole home, and the 700 level had as many rules as international waters as our Phillie of the week?  Because today, August 12, John Kruk joins the Phillies Wall of Fame.  Yes, Kruk joins the historic ranks of the likes of Darren Daulton, Richie Ashburn and Granny Hamner.  In his career with the Phillies (1989-1994), John Kruk was a three-time All Star and hit over .300 in four seasons.  While the numbers are certainly impressive, the best part about the Krukster was that he looked like the Krukster. When Chris Farley portrays you on SNL, then you know you don’t exactly look like an athlete, but Kruk had it all, and that’s why we loved him.  Mullet, smoking in the dugout, beer gut, beard – yeah, sign me up for that first baseman.

Tweet Of The Week

We’ve learned a lot about our newest Phillie over the past couple weeks: solid fielder, great hitter, unorthodox to say the least, loves to eat and apparently loves to tweet.  This tweet came up yesterday during an episode of Intentional Talk on the MLB Network.  The baseball talk show, hosted by Chris Rose and Kevin Millar, was discussing who had a worst mustache between two ballplayers who aren’t Phillies so who cares who they were, and Hunter Pence tweeted into the show to add his two Pence (Ha, bad puns.  Gotta love them.)  Who is Domingo Ayala that Pence referenced?  A character from a series of youtube clips making fun of baseball players.  Watch them here.  Can we just agree that Hunter Pence is the coolest mid-season acquisition of all time?  Yeah?  Okay, good.

So that’s  all we ave for this week of .  Hope you enjoyed.  Tune in next week for a whole new batch of nonsense.  If you have any Bluntie-worthy material you think should be up for consideration, don’t hesitate to tweet us, or drop us a line on the contact page.

Roy O. Searches To Get Back Into Form Against Nats

" rel="bookmark">

Charlie has really worked this pitching staff so far this season.  With that “normal dead-arm” that Cole Hamels is dealing with right now, it could be a sign that maybe it’s time to stop letting  the pitchers eat so many innings.  The three aces of the team, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels all sit above the 170 innings pitched mark.  Halladay leads the National League with 175 2/3 innings pitched, while Lee and Hamels are both at 172.  I know that these guys are professionals and should be able to tough anything out, but it’s August and there’s just 44 games left in the season.  We can’t be stretching them out before the post season.  Little Roy is another story, he has only compiled 77 1/3 innings pitched thus far.

Roy Oswalt (4-7, 3.84 ERA) will be making his second start since being placed on the DL back on June 23, with a bulging disc. Taking on the Nationals in game two of three, he will be looking to put his last start where it belongs, in the past.  Last Sunday, his first start back, he took the hill against the Giants.  He struggled with his command and let the ball hit the bat.  In 6 innings, he allowed a career high 12 hits, while allowing 3 earned runs, walking 2 and striking out 4.  That loss was the Phillies’ only loss on their 10-game road trip.  There’s always hope that Oswalt can find a resurgence on the bump.  He is a career 5-4, 3.12 ERA vs the Nats and the Phillies have always had success against them at Citizens Bank Park.

Opposing Oswalt will be the Nats’ lefty John Lannan (8-7, 3.56 ERA), who is coming off a no-decision against Colorado in which he threw 7 strong innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 earned run, and 4 walks.  The lefty is now considered Washington’s ace after Jason Marquis was traded to Arizona.  He is probably one of the Phillies’ most hit opponents.  In 14 career starts against the Fightins he has a record of 1-10, with a 5.96 ERA.  He did, however, earn his first career win against them back on June 1, yielding just 4 hits, 1 unearned run, through 5.1 innings pitched.

The Phillies, and their hot streak, were haulted for a moment last night in their 4-2 loss.  Cole Hamels, who left the game after 5 innings last night says he’s going into the “dead arm zone”, a time period in which a lot of pitchers go through during the season.

Hamels says he is not very concerned.  ”It’s that part of the year. You get fatigued a little bit and you just have to battle through it and move onto the next game,” Hamels said. ”It’s just one of those times of the year where you are traveling, pitching a lot of innings and things kind of mound.”

Charlie Manuel slightly disagreed with Cole.  ”There’s concern there, I guess,” Manuel said. “By the same time, he was definitely having a tough night.”

Whatever the circumstances are, it appears the starters might need to get a little rest as the season nears its end and the Phillies prepare for fall baseball.  One option could be to to convert the normally five-man rotation to a six-man rotation to alleviate the strain on the pitching staff.  Of course that would mean Kendrick gets a start from time to time.  Gulp.

First Pitch @ 7:05 PM ET!

Tonight’s Lineup vs Nats

1. J Roll SS
2. Victorino CF
3. Chutts 2B
4. Rhyno 1B
5. Pence RF
6. Ibanez LF
7. Chooch C
8. Valdez  3B
9. Oswalt P.

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

A Phillies Fan in a Strange Land – Part 2

Part 2 begins not too long ago. A month we call February in fact. It includes some laughs and some tears, but overall there is a lesson learned in the end. Without further adieu, Part 2 of A Phillies Fan in a Strange Land…

I had booked a trip to San Diego back in February. Upon confirming the trip, my Dad told me to see who the Padres were playing that week. I went to the Padres site and clicked through to July. My heart was in my throat as I read “PHILLIES” across the dates that I was attending. The Padres are playing the Phils when I’m in San Diego? I had thought to myself. I was elated, but it didn’t last. I quickly realized that these were away games. Of course they were. The one time I go to San Diego and the Padres are playing the Phillies in Philadelphia.

My best friend Jeromy, who made the trek with me, pointed out that it would still be awesome to go to the bar and watch the local game supporting the away team. I realized this was a pretty neat opportunity. To cheer for the away team, not in the home teams house, but in their stomping grounds, in their watering holes.

Upon arriving in Sandy, after a long day of flying, we waited for our luggage at the baggage claim. Jeromy had been wearing a bright orange Flyers shirt, and I had tied an orange and black Flyers bandana onto my bag so I could tell the difference in case someone had a similar piece of luggage. I thought to myself for sure we would be heckled. Even a small comment from the airport workers. Maybe a boo pointed in our direction. Anything to put us down for being from Philadelphia.

But there was nothing. Not a single comment. We had traveled across country and no one even cared enough to break our balls about it. It was strange. We made our way to our hotel and prepared for the next few days.

The first day into the beautiful city of San Diego, we took the trolley past Petco Park. My first reaction? Petco Park was underwhelming. Seeing the park, if you didn’t know baseball, you would have no idea the Padres play there. There was a huge advertisement for the new Batman game, Arkham City, sprawling the wall of Petco. I thought it was awesome, but for Padres fans, it doesn’t really support the team. You can walk down the street and find stores carrying more Dodgers and Giants gear than their own home team. It was pretty sad to see and I was starting to feel for the Padres fans.

We were watching the local news on the first night where they were previewing the upcoming series with the Phillies and the local sports anchor’s actual words were, “Let’s face it, the Padres suck.” Verbatim. It was really unsettling for myself being from such a proud sports city.

The true test would come a night later. We would jettison ourselves to a local bar to watch some highlights and root for the away team.

It was retro night for the Phils and Fathers and we were excited to see our boys rockin’ the old school. We arrived at the bar just in time to see the Phillies highlights and much to my surprise, no one was watching. As I looked around the bar it was evident that no one cared. I guess they all agreed with their local sports anchor. The Padres did suck, and no one gave two shits.

We even talked loudly about the Phillies. How good they are. How much worse the Padres are. What we thought they would do at the deadline. No one cared. It was surreal. A local bar, in San Diego, with Padres highlights on, and not one person watched the television with interest. Tony Gwynn would be rolling in his grave. If he was dead.

The next day was momentous for myself. I had really started to sympathize with the San Diego Padre fan. They had to be somewhere. I know that they were surrounded by better local baseball organizations, but there had to be someone that I would see who was a proud Padre believer.

That’s when it happened. It was the second game day of the series between the two teams when I saw it. It was like seeing a unicorn or a championship parade for the Sixers, you know, it was like seeing something mythical. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted it.

At first I thought it was a Yankees jersey. The dark blue Padres jersey had never been spotted in the wild up until this point. But there he was. In the heart of downtown San Diego. In the Gaslamp Quarter of all places. The Padres fan in his natural habitat. His blue coat was coming in nice and thick during these summer months. It was a rare breed indeed. The specimen I had encountered was wearing the double three on his back, and the nameplate “Piazza”. He looked something like the specimen pictured to the right, but try to imagine if you can, the fur being blue and not white. I know it is difficult because creatures like this are only talked about in books and the talking pictures.

Just as fast as he had appeared, he vanished. He was startled by something he had seen before. A man with a blue coat, not unlike his own, but brighter. This man had the local attire I was use to seeing. The Piazza Padre fan had been startled by a man in a blue Utley t-shirt.

And that was it. 6 days in San Diego and one fan spotted sporting a Padres jersey. And it wasn’t even a current player. As the days went on more and more did I see the Phillies fans. Matching fathers and sons wearing the Phillies emblem with pride. The random young woman wearing a Victoria’s Secret PINK shirt with the Phillies logo on the front. One man called out to us, he had not been wearing any Phillies gear, but upon seeing our Phillies shirts on he said, “PHILLIEEEEEEEES!” and pumped his fist in the air. It felt like we were home.

But we weren’t. We were in a strange land. One that keeps it’s local fans hidden. Perhaps underground or in the walls until the Padres came back home. It was an eye opening experience for myself. A young man, born and raised to love everything Philadelphia. Growing up in the walls of that city makes you feel proud of your local teams. It’s something that I have always been proud of, being a fan from Philadelphia. And now being in the midst of glory years for most Philly teams, it just makes being a fan even better.

I’ve witnessed first hand some low points for the Phillies and the Flyers, but nothing was as bad as the fandom (or lack there of) in San Diego. I don’t feel like I’ve ever taken it for granted, but after seeing how bad it can be, I’ll never take my hometown teams for granted again. I’ll always be here, and in other cities, proudly supporting my hometown boys.

Cole Hamels Eats Whole Camels.

" rel="bookmark">

Seriously, everyone just needs to calm down. Cole Hamels is fine. After the loss on Friday and after only going 5 innings, some people were worried. We here at The Phillies Blunt are your daily dose of chill pill. Cole Hamels had an MRI today, just to make sure that his pitching shoulder was still bitchin’.

CSNPhilly says that Hamels “chalked it up to a dead-arm start, which happens over the course of a long season.” Whatever that means. Oh. Cole Hamels is here to explain what that means:

“It was just one of those things where I wasn’t able to get loosened up.” Oh, okay. Now I understand. Please continue Cole, “It’s that time of the year where you’re a little fatigued a little bit and battle through it and move on to the next game.” Ah. So everything is peaches and cream in Cole Hamels land. Thanks for clearing that up Cole.

CSN went on to say that Cole will skip his turn in the rotation which would have been Friday in Washington. Obviously Hamels is doing this because the last time he pitched against Washington on a Friday, he lost. So he’s nipping it in the ass before it becomes a regular thing. Take that Washington!

Roy Oswalt will go instead on his normal amount of rest because of yesterday’s cancellation and the Phils’ off day today.

Rest that shoulder Cole, and keep filling your belly with whole camels.

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

There’s A Vanimal Unleashed In San Francisco, Be Afraid

The earthquake sirens have already sounded in San Francisco, and all of you Giants fans better hide your kids, hide your wives and hide your husbands.  Why all the hubbub? Well boys and girls, Vance Worley (7-1, 2.33 ERA) is on the hill tonight for the Phillies.  That’s right, the Vanimal is back to attack, and he’s getting ready right now.  Worley’s coming off a tempered start against the Pirates in which he went 6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K in a 6-5 Phillies win.

In his last start against the Giants (7/26), Vance Worley dealt pure filth.  In his first career complete game, he allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 5.  Speaking of complete games, Cliff Lee has left a path for young Vance to follow tonight.  His complete game shut out last night boosted the Phillies 8 1/2 games ahead of the Braves in the NL East.  If the Braves lose tonight and Vance can dance, the Phillies will be in the drivers seat with a 9 game lead.

Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.81 ERA) will take the bump in his home ballpark tonight.  It’s Sanchez’s first start against the Phillies since Game 6 of the NLCS back in October.  The Phillies got two runs off of him and almost started a brawl on behalf of Chase Utley, who was hit by a pitch and tossed the ball back to Sanchez who didn’t like it. (Chase=bad ass, look it up)

The Phillies’ bats helped back Cliff last night and, hopefully, they can do the same for Vance.  The Giants ARE NOT a hitting team.  Their first time scoring 6 or more runs at home was earlier this week.  How many times have the Phillies scored 6 or more runs in an inning?   A lot.  But tonight’s lineup doesn’t feature the big bats of the Phillies. Charlie’s switching it up against the lefty Sanchez, no Howard, no Chooch.

First Pitch @ 10:15 PM ET

Tonight’s Lineup @ San Francisco:

1. J Roll SS
2. Polly 3B
3. Victorino CF
4. Chutts 2B
5. Pence RF
6. Rauuuuul LF
7. The Mayberry 1B
8. The Schneid-inator C
9. The Vanimal P.
