I read today that the Orioles are shopping Mark Reynolds. Would he be worth a shot for the Phils. He is a true power hitter and should hit 40 in Philly. On the other hand he is a poor fielder and strikes out a lot. He’s still young and might be a potent offensive weapon. Any thoughts?

Perhaps going straight up for Joe Blanton would be a solution?

He also plays first base and third. Stinks as a fielder at both positions. But, he does hit the LONG BALL.

Mark Reynolds makes Ryan Howard’s K rate look good. On top of that Reynolds played more games than Polanco last year and was worth significantly less WAR

David Hale wrote that Brown did not travel with the team today due to injury. With Nix’s relatively rough Spring, I wonder if Brown is missing a big opportunity here to win a spot?

I don’t think there is an opportunity to be had… I think, unfortunately, Rube made his decision and he’s not going back on it. Brown, when asked about his neck today, said, ‘I’m good.’. You have to think he is being held back… There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s willing and able to go but with every missed game, Rube knows he’s further justified. The Phillies continue to make head scratching decisions with Dom.

Reynolds line last year was .221/.323/.483 and of course he strikes out more than anyone. Putting aside the $7.5 million and assuming Polanco is healthy it comes down to Galvis or Reynolds in the lineup. Reynolds definitely gives you the power but I can see Rollins and Polanco stranded at 2nd and 3rd with consecuitve strikeouts from Howard and Reynolds. If Reynolds could get his numbers up to .250/.350//550 I would go for it but his K rate is not going anywhere.

I love what Galvis is doing, but he’ll probably subtract from our offense. If Polanco proves to be healthy, why not move him to 2B and give more playing time to Wigginton at 3B?

What Galvis lacks in offense, he makes up with defense… Defensively, Galvis + Polly > Polly + Wigginton. I don’t know how much more Wigginton will give you on offense but this team is going to win with defense and pitching… Play to your strengths.

If Galvis can stay over .240, I agree. But even that is doubtful. If he’s giving us Mini-Mart numbers, I’d rather we go for more offense with Wigginton and shifting Polly to 2nd.

I like today’s lineup, except that I’d take Wigs out for Polanco (once he’s healthy), bat Polanco 2nd, pushing everybody else down. And Brown for Nix.

Ideal lineup:

1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Placido Polanco, 3B
3. Shane Victorino, CF
4. Hunter Pence, RF
5. John Mayberry Jr., 1B (or Jim Thome)
6. Domonic Brown, LF
7. Carlos Ruiz, C
8. Freddy Galvis, 2B

-OR-

If Galvis is really struggling at the plate, which wouldn’t be surprising, we should go with:

1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Placido Polanco, 2B
3. Shane Victorino, CF
4. Hunter Pence, RF
5. Ty Wigginton, 3B
6. John Mayberry Jr., 1B (or Jim Thome)
7. Domonic Brown, LF
8. Carlos Ruiz, C

This would be our most power-oriented lineup given the circumstances.

I’d like to point out that your second lineup has the guy with the 2nd highest OBP on the team batting 8th.

Wigginton really needs to be at the bottom of the lineup, since, you know, he kind of sucks at the plate anymore. The only guy on last year’s team who got on base at a lower clip than Wigginton was Raul. Would you have Raul bat 4th?

Here are their lines from last season:

Raul – .245 /.289 /.419
Ty – .242 /.315 /.416

*Typo.

Meant to say, “Would you have Raul batting 5th”

Under certain circumstances (ie. select pitchers), yes. But you make good points… 5th might too high for Wigginton. At the same time, the fact that I even considered putting him there speaks volumes about the uncertainty surrounding other guys (like Brown and Mayberry) at this point. He does hit his fair share of home runs and has a better slugging % than Chooch, for example, so we might need that bit of extra power in the middle of the lineup…

Chooch should be bumped up to 6th or 7th. I’ll confess I’m not a fan of batting Chooch 2nd despite his high OBP b/c we have two very good No. 2 hitters in Polanco and Victorino.

We couldn’t score a run :(
Cliff was dominant with 7Ks, though.
