UPDATE, 1:15 pm: Ryan Howard will remain in a walking boot for at least the next week, according to GM Ruben Amaro (through the beat writers in Clearwater, FL). The infection in the foot is gone, however, they want to play it safe and make sure the area heals completely before they get into baseball activities.
Regardless of what the Phillies say, it’s a setback in some way. It pushes him back and we’ll delay his conditioning work, so don’t expect Howard to be ready before May.

The MRI did show some scar tissue from last years hand surgery, along with some swelling. Hale says to expect an update from Ruben Amaro Jr. at some point today to discuss the plan for Brown.
Sounds like the Phillies, and Brown, dodged a bullet here. You’d hate to see Dom miss more time because of a hand injury. We’re all looking forward to seeing a progression, and that obviously cannot happen with another DL stint. Let’s hope Brown is back in the lineup by next week.

I’m struggling to understand the urgency of Ryan Howard’s return. A Mayberry / Thome platoon would likely produce similar output (read: Why MLB teams should never sign first basemen not named Pujols to long term, 100-million plus dollar contracts). Their combined 2011 production:
Thome+Mayberry: 30 HR, 99 RBI, .844 OPS in 620 plate appearances
Howard: 33 HR, 116 RBI, .835 OPS in 644 plate appearances
If the Phillies had to live with a Juan Pierre / Dom Brown / Scott Podsednik troika in left and a Mayberry / Thome platoon at first, it’s almost a certainty that production comes close to, if not improves, on the Howard / Ibanez show last season.
It’s also a lesson in why teams should rarely waste long-term deals on left fielders or first basemen who’ll be over 30 during the length of their contract. No reason why the above platoons couldn’t produce 90 runs scored and a .350 OBP from left and 100 RBI and an .800+ OPS from first base, at a total cost somewhere south of $5 million total after incentives.
Meanwhile, the natural air conditioning from the left fielder and first baseman’s 280 strikeouts last season cost roughly $30 million.

I agree, whoever we decide to platoon at First will likely produce at a level that we could reasonably expect from Howard at this point in his career. I don’t think we can or should rely on Howard for the kind of production he used to be capable of. Those days are gone and the injury will only quicken his decreasing contributions. He can’t play at the level he did three years ago anymore regardless of health. Definitely on the decline and we need to reconcile it and look for other options. Short term, I think we will be fine. You can say the same about Utley, Polanco and Rollins at this point in their careers. We really need to infuse this team with youth and in a hurry! Pitching is so good on this team that it will mitigate the problems with inconsistency on offense and the aging core, but, not for long. Dom Brown cannot play baseball at the major league level. We need to package him in a trade for an everyday player at either third base or first base at the trading deadline. Preferably a power hitting third baseman, but the entire infield is on a major decline and any one of the positions could be upgraded. Please, no more long term contracts for guys past their prime.
