2012 Spring Training, News, Posts
Shane Victorino had two RBI’s in the third inning, which started a 6-run rally for the Phils. Freddy Galvis went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Word out of Clearwater is that he wants to play more at third base and second base as a way to get to the majors quicker. Seems like a good plan to me.
On the pitching side, Lee was Lee. But as a whole, the Phillies surrendered just seven hits scattered. Kyle Kendrick pitched two strong frames, striking out two. Jake Diekman, who has an outside shot at the Phillies bullpen coming out of camp, fanned two in the ninth.
Tomorrow, Phillies take on the Astros at 1:05 in Clearwater.

If Galvis can move over to third that would be fantastic. You have your third baseman of the future. He’s impressed me with his production so far, small sample size or not. Looking forward to hopefully seeing him replace Poly in 2013.

Ehhh…not so sure about that. He’d be a decent super-utility guy, but generally you like to get some pop out of your third base position. Granted, Polanco has very little power in his bat either, but he’s still very competent at the plate, last year notwithstanding. While Galvis has made huge strides at the plate over the last few years, he’s still not projected to be anywhere near the .300 hitter that Poly has been. You can get away with a weaker bat at SS though, because the defensive value of the position is so high.
I actually think it’s more likely that at some point Jimmy moves to 3B toward the end of his contract (or his next one). That leaves plenty of time for Galvis because he’s still only 22.
Of course, Galvis will certainly be quite useful if there are more injury issues with Utley, Rollins and Po-linko, I just don’t think you can count on him to give you much offensively at this point.

I think you can throw out the position by positions batting numbers. If Jimmy can get back to hitting .260-.270 with 10-15 HRs and Chase can stay healthy and give you .290 with 25-30 HR you can live with a 3B who is hitting .240 with no power but outstandin D. I do not see Jimmy moving over. If you let the Glavis kid play 3rd and if you can get power from an outfield of JMJ/D Brown, Vic and Pence that would make up for a weak hitting 3rd basemen, and if Ruiz is going to give you clutch hitting at .280 with a big ob% the offense would be ok. If Glavis can play the hot corner to the defense standards he is suppose to have a SS you would have an awesome defense behind 3 aces for a couple of years. The only bad defensive position would be if D Brown comes around and takes over left field

We’re never going to see 25-30 HR from Utley again. I’d be surprised to see him even approach 20. It’s sad, but it’s reality.

Galvis’ glove could actually be better than Jimmy’s in a couple of years. So I agree with Eric, that moving Jimmy to 3rd would make more sense.
It’s still too early to tell, but I like the fact that Galvis is willing to learn other positions. Hell, maybe if he keeps it up he could replace Mini-Mart or whoever is our super-utility guy come September.

Thats in a perfect world Beta. All these guys are starting to decline so i dont think going past this year you will get 20 HR’s from J-Roll or 30 from Chase. Or from that matter obtaining that BA. Vic was never a power hitter although these last couple years he has shown that he can hit a few HR’s.Say he is good for about 15 HR’s. You’ll only get 7-8 HR’s from Ruiz.. Whos to predict that Ruiz will continue to be that clutch hitter he was in 2010? Thus sliding a possible weak hitting with no power Galvis into 3rd wont be optimal. With Polly you could give up the power aspect because he hit for high average and when healthy you could get 10 HR’s or so out of him. I could see Galvis replacing Mini-Mart utility role. Unless everyone is wrong and all the sudden Martinez starts to hit .290. It is possible that could be training Galvis to play utility as a just in case.

4 things-
I’d be willing to bet that Mini Mart starts the year on the team. Maybe Galvis replaces him if he fails badly mid year, but not before. Just don’t see it, Charlie seems to love the guy. Although I wish they’d give Fransden a fair look.
Juan Pierre and Scotty Pods should NOT make the team over Dom Brown, but one of them probably will. I won’t bet this time, but the Podsednick error I saw was no worse than any of Brown’s, and Pierre looks slower than he used to be.
I disagree that you have to pigeon hole which positions are power positions and which ones are not. In the late 60′s CF was considered one of the premier power positions. (Mantle, Mays, etc.) Now with the exception of Kemp, and maybe a few others, it’s more about speed and defense. Sometimes things change, and you have to change with them. What’s the difference which positions produce the weak bats or the strong ones, as long as you get the right amount of both.
I’m really paranoid that Utley is nearing done-ski, hope I’m wrong. Chris Rose of MLB Network (not even close to a reliable source) yesterday reported that “Utley is again suffering from tendonitis in his knees”. I don’t think he is again suffering, I think he never stopped, he just played through it.

The whole Jimmy-to-third thing is something I’ve mentioned a couple of times and I can definitely see it as a possibility. It’s nice that Galvis is open to playing 3 infield positions right now. Sounds like we may need him.
