2012 Spring Training, Analysis, News, Opinion, Posts
Joe Blanton hurled two scoreless innings in his first action this Spring, and the Phillies avoided their third straight loss to the Yankees with a 9-3 win. He induced five groundouts to go along with one strikeout in those two innings. He looked comfortable and in control on the mound, a very good sign for the righty’s first start since his elbow injury. If Blanton pitches that way throughout the Spring and avoids injury, he may even find himself as the fourth starter in the rotation, ahead of Vance Worley. But the likely scenario has Blanton holding down the final spot in the rotation behind Worley.
Austin Hyatt, a guy who would be considered for the rotation if Blanton were to have a setback with his elbow, gave up two runs in two innings, although one of the runs was a direct result of sloppy defense by the Phillies.
On the offensive side of things, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, and Jim Thome each had two hits. However, up until the sixth inning, the rest of the team had none. Jimmy stole two bases in one inning, and Hunter Pence was able to swipe a bag as well. Juan Pierre was caught stealing after he subbed in to run for Jim Thome.
Out in left, Domonic Brown again had issues with the glove, as he misplayed a ball which led to a triple for Brett Gardener, who scored on the play due to an error. At the plate, Brown was 0-2, but was able to draw a walk and eventually score. Third basemen Hector Luna knocked in three runs on a double in the sixth off Yankees pitcher Juan Cedeno. That’s four RBI in four at-bats for the likely minor leaguer this Spring Training. Michael Martinez showed some power with a home run in the seventh, a very rare sight from Mini Mart.
The Phillies take on the Blue Jays tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

Brown can hit but he is lost in the outfield. Definitely needs a lot more repetitions in judging fly balls.

I think he can hit seems to be fielding. There was a reason RAJ did not want Dom called up last year. Well there you go…

So, I finally took a look at Luna’s stats. The guy is 32, has a little beef to him (he’s 225 lbs) and plays the infield.
And why is it that Mini mart is sticking around?

i think dom can hit. he has a good approach at the plate a couple of his outs monday were real ropes. but his defense, or lack of it sells me to the fact he’s going to AAA.

You know what… trade Dom. He’ll never survive in this city because of impatient jack a**** that will never be willing to let him work through his struggles. It’s Spring Training… it’s time to work out the kinks (you know, the kind you have when you’re switching from right field to left field) and yet we’re still jumping all over him. As long as he’s here, he’ll never have the opportunity to work through the adjustment period that it takes when you become a big leaguer… big league pitching is not AAA pitching. So you might as well trade Dom for some AA relief pitcher because he’s worthless as long as he’s forced to play with the threat of demotion looming over his head.

Dom’s been great at the dish in spring training… he’s only hitting .250 but it could easily be .500 (8 friggin ab’s… can’t believe I’m arguing stats when he’s only had 8 friggin ab’s). He still doesn’t have a strikeout and he’s hit some hard hit balls that just didn’t find a hole.

What’s going on in that 4th paragraph? He shrinks an inch and drops 10lbs in the first line.
