Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke
We’ve Been Waiting For This OneOh yes, it’s finally here. The claimed “World Series Preview” will begin tonight at 7:05 PM ET. Three games, two teams, three great pitching match ups. Tonight kicks it all off with Cliff Lee (8-5, 2.87 ERA). Lee is coming off two straight complete game shut outs, and will take on the Red Sox and their nuclear-powered bats. On the opposing side stands Josh Beckett (6-2, 1.86 ERA), who is making his first start since June 15 (scratched last Tuesday with stomach illness). This is going to be freaking sweet! The Phils are coming off a victorious weekend series vs the A’s, where the Fightins took 2 of 3. Also, some bad news coming out of the Phillies’ clubhouse this weekend. Roy Oswalt has bulging discs in his back, and considers himself a “liability.” He will eventually need surgery, but for now he is holding off on that and will try to be back by August, but only time can tell. In other injury news, Ryan Madson will be out with a bruised hand that really none of us knew about, until Uncle Cholly told the media on Friday night.
Now back to tonight, this series has been anticipated since the schedules came out. Cliff Lee, who is totally in control right now, will go against another high powered, offensive juggernaut American League team. A-Gonz, Pedroia, and Adrian Beltre are red hot right now. One hard hitter Lee won’t be taking on tonight is Big Papi. That is unless Beckett, who is coming off of 9 days rest makes an early exit, resulting in the need of a pinch hitter. He will also avoid Carl Crawford who is out with a sore hamstring. Is this a lucky break, or would it not make a difference? Lee is a 2-4 with a 4.06 ERA career vs the Red Sox.
Even if he had to take on the Red Sox’s best lineup, he could still take ‘em.
As for Josh Beckett, he might have some ease with the Phils, as he has a 8-4, 3.98 ERA career record vs the Fightins. No hating going on here, but let’s be honest, we aren’t an offensive juggernaut. I am looking forward to 3 straight rubber matches this week.
