Madson To The DL

" rel="bookmark">

Yet another Phillie has found himself on the sidelines dealing with an injury.  This time, its closer number three, Ryan Madson, who was placed on the disabled list today, June 28.  Fortunately, Madson’s placement on the DL will be retroactive to June 19, the last time he pitched, so he could make it back to the active roster as soon as early next week.

However, this isn’t the first closer we’ve seen deal with injuries this season for the Phillies.  In spring training it was Brad Lidge who took his trip to ouchie land.  That trip has turned into an extended vacation, as Lidge is still there.  The next pitcher to take the role of closer was Jose Contreras, but again, an injury sent him to the DL.  He came back, and then left again.  Now, it’s Madson.  Mad Dog has pitched commendably in the closer role, recording 15 saves in 16 opportunities, but with the inflammation in his pitching hand, now the Phillies will look for a fourth man with the “closer mentality.”

The Phillies have called up right-hander Andrew Carpenter in Madson’s place, who sounds like a promising pitcher.  Carpenter has gone 5-0 with an ERA of 1.58 through 28 games in Triple-A down at Lehigh Valley.  However, the most likely candidate to be the interim closer while Madson’s hand heals is Antonio Bastardo.  The Bastard has been nothing short of spectacular this season, sporting an impressive 0.96 ERA in 28 innings of work out of the pen.  That is just straight up ridiculous, but the question remains whether Bastardo has the make up mentally to be a closer.  The other option the Phillies have is to have the bullpen go by committee in closing games.  It would be preferable if Bastardo can make the position his alone, however, because it would set up the pen into a routine.  Baseball players need routine.  So get out the stress balls, people.  Until the Mad Dog can comes back from the vet with a clean bill of health, it could be a little scary in late innings during close games.
