Phillies President David Montgomery issued a statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Andy’s family, especially his wife Eun Joo, his son Allan and his daughter Luanne. Andy was a dear friend to many, an absolute gentleman, and a true professional. I had the pleasure of working with him for 26 years during which time he made a significant contribution to our club. Additionally, along with thousands of Philadelphia sports fans, I admired his versatility in announcing not only Phillies games but also his work with the Eagles, Sixers and Villanova Basketball. Since leaving the Phillies broadcast booth in 2001, Andy remained close to the club. We will all miss our dear friend.”
As I was just becoming a Phillies fan, I recall Andy’s nasal delivery and his gentlemanly style. He was never too high, never too low. He always seemed to me like an odd fit in this town, but he did fit in – for 26 seasons. And to do that in Philadelphia, you must connect with the fans and he did. Musser was smooth and kind, just as Harry Kalas was. He wasn’t in your face and didn’t need to be.
I recall sitting out on the porch, watching my dad cook on the grill, listening to the Phillies on his POS radio plugged into the lamppost. And I recall Andy’s voice. Many of you will remember the same.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. ET on Jan. 31, in the Sanctuary of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr, Pa. 19010. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church Foundation.
Please share your memories of Andy Musser…

Sad news about Andy Musser–I used to be a travel agent, and one day I was speaking to a man who needed to make hotel reservations for a driving trip to Florida…I recognized the voice,it was Andy Musser! He had such a nice easy delivery when he worked the radio booth, I always listening to him during Phillies games. R.I. P. Andy

I loved listening to Andy (and Harry) as a kid, falling asleep to Phillies games on the radio. I still hear those voices in my dreams.

Andy had the best Phillies home run call ever: “He buried it! He buried it!”

I was surprised to hear about Musser’s passing. I remember him having a nice vocal delivery; soft not loud or strident. He was part of that past tradition of By Saam, Bill Campbell and Harry Kalas in giving a straight forward, no nonsense play by play broadcasting of Phillies games. There was no showmanship or being about themselves unlike several broadcasters today.
My favorite moments in listening to the Phillies games are with the team of By Saam, Bill Campbell and Rich Ashburn back in the 60′s – 70′s period. What a trio! I will always remember By Saam calling Jim Bunting’s perfect game on father’s day in 1964. By the way, I was a young teenager when I listened to the radio broadcast of By Saam and Bill Campbell calling Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game playing for Phila. Warriors vs NY Knicks in 1962.

Rest in peace Andy. I hope the Phillies honor him in some way during the season.

RIP Andy
Almost all the great baseball voices of my youth are gone now. I think Bill Campbell may be still with us now?, if so he has to be in his late 80′s. It’s funny how I can’t remember a detail from last week, but the baseball memories and the guys that made the calls stay with us forever.

It’s also funny how Andy Musser kind of falls into the backdrop, even though he was around nearly as long as Harry Kalas. He just wasn’t as big as Harry – but he wasn’t boisterous, so maybe he enjoyed it that way?
A friend of my parents and I would always joke about Musser because one time he thought that Charlie Hayes threw a ball into the stands, but John Kruk actually had caught it at first base by jumping. Something like “he threw the ball into the stand…no wait, Kruk caught it. He’s got it”..

Andy Musser – rest in peace, sir. He was living proof that 90% of one’s success in this world is attributable to merely showing up.

Good luck to Brad Lidge. His 2008 season will always be held in high esteem.

2008 seems like such a long time ago. It IS slipping away, for sure. Hell, even Eric Bruntlett is gone, too! I can still see Lidge dropping to the ground, Chooch running towards the mound, all while listening to Harry the K make that magical call… Anyway, I wish Lidge well in DC. This move [...]

schmenkman- that was funny! And yes Chuck, we will all hope for the best. I will still be critical in a rational manner when I see fit, but I have never booed a Phillies player. Therefore, apocryphal or not, I won’t lose my eye sight.
