“I see you all know by now. Gotta deal with me for 3 (4) more years!”
That’s from Jimmy Rollins’ tweeter feed (@JimmyRollins11) earlier today. The “dealing with” JRoll refers to is a deal that was reached today, Saturday, December 17, between himself and the Phillies. It’s a 3 year contract worth a reported $33 million with a vesting option (which will most likely be met) for a fourth year at a price tag of an addition $11 Mil. Coming into the off season, Rollins was asking for a 5-year-deal, which everyone knew would not happen. Not from the Phillies, and probably not from anyone else. Concessions would have to, and would be, made on Jimmy’s part.
So with the figures set, the question is, is Jimmy right? Are we going to have to deal with him? It’s an interesting quandary and one that everyone probably already has an opinion on, but let’s consider the facts as I see them. Jimmy’s injuries over the past couple years have been an issue. His legs (read speed) are not what they used to be. He is probably not a leadoff hitter anymore (if he every really was). Three and four years is probably past what Jimmy has in him as “productive years.” However, his defense is still solid. He’s passionate about the Phillies and winning (I think?). The Phillies are closer to another World Series with him than without him.
It’s that last one that really matters. Had the Phillies not re-signed JRoll, this year’s starting shortstop for the Phils would have most likely been Freddy Glavis. Glavis is a solid player in the Phillies’ system, he was named the organization’s minor leaguer of the year this past year, but the truth of the matter is that he’s not ready for the Show just yet. Maybe in the three to four years he’ll be more well quipped for the majors, but now is too soon. With Jimmy starting at short for the Phillies, they are just a better team right now than without him. Money, years, ect. are all secondary to this fact. We want rings now, not next year, now. The Phils are in a better position to do that with Jimmy Rollins in red pinstripes. Plus, maybe he’ll continue to do stupid shit with Red Bull for our entertainment!
Now, stay health James, or we really will be just dealing with you, and for God’s sake, get us a ring, will ya?
