It’s the finale.
The Phillies and Braves have both used their pitching to each win a game this weekend. Will pitching prevail in the finale this afternoon? Cole Hamels (10-4, 2.40 ERA) and Derek Lowe (5-6, 4.21 ERA) will go head-to-head on the hill today in an effort that will put their team in a great position in the NL East heading into the All-Star break.
The first two games this weekend were filled with great pitching, and mediocre hitting. The Phillies entered the series 2 1/2 games ahead of the Braves, which is where they still sit today. At 1:05 this afternoon, they have a chance to pull back to 3 1/2 games ahead heading into a four day break.
Cole Hamels has pitched like a 15-year veteran this season, accumulating a 10-4 record while maintaining his ERA to 2.40, one of the best in the National League. Though he hasn’t received the run support that he deserves, it’s safe to say, Cole is having a Cy Young year. In his last outing in Florida, he threw 8 solid innings, allowing only 2 earned runs on 8 hits in a 14-2 Phillies’ win. He learned Sunday that he will be on the All-Star roster in Phoenix on Tuesday…but, he won’t pitch because of his outing today. He is a career 10-6 with a 3.65 ERA vs the Braves. Today, he will get his chance to earn his 11th win, and join Roy at that impressive win total. It’s up to the offense to give him the run support.
That’s where Derek Lowe (5-6, 4.21 ERA) comes in. Mr. Drunk & Disorderly himself will be on the mound this afternoon. I wonder if he’s taking a taxi to the game? Anyway, he has not been pitching like the 15-year veteran he is. In his last outing, he earned a win going 5 1/3 innings while allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits. He is a career 8-4 with a 2.90 ERA vs the Fightins. This will be his third time facing the Phils this season. In his two starts against us this year, he has pitched 13 innings and allowed only 9 hits and 2 runs.
This game matters in the most extreme way. We need to break out of the RISP slump we’ve fallen into. We need to score 4 or 5 runs today and Cole can do the rest.
