The Hawaiian Brings it Home

" rel="bookmark">

Victorino has gone two for two now in the balloting for the All Star Game’s Final Vote.  Shane won the voting with 9.2 million votes.  Right behind him was Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier.  Rockies first baseman Todd Helton came in third with Nationals first baseman Mike Morse and Diamonbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

I was really shocked that the home town D-Backs fans didn’t make more of a push for Kennedy, who, you know, plays for the Diamondbacks.  But then I remembered that people in Arizona don’t care about baseball, much less sports.

It is unclear whether or not our boy will actually participate in the Midsummer Classic, as he has been injured since Sunday with a sprained thumb.  I’m sure Victorino would love to play, and wants to play, but the Phillies will probably advise against it.

Reports say that Victorino expects to play this weekend against the Braves.

Shane joins his teammates Placido Polanco, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay on the NL squad in Arizona.

Whether he plays or not, it is still a huge honor to be voted into the All Star Game.  So on behalf of everyone at The Phillies Blunt, I’d like to say Congratulations Shane! We hope to be cheering you on next Tuesday.

Phillies and Braves Locked and Loaded For Huge Series

" rel="bookmark">

It’s finally here!  The series of the year (so far) has arrived.  The Phillies and the Braves will duke it out in a three game set over the weekend, before all 30 teams head into the All-Star break.  Charlie set the rotation a week ago making sure that his three best pitchers would get the start this weekend.  Roy “You Wish You Never Faced Me” Halladay (11-3, 2.44 ERA) will start off the series tonight vs Brandon “Fat Chicks At The” Beachy (3-1, 3.23 ERA).  Roy is coming off a helluva start vs his former team, the Blue Jays .  Last Saturday, he pitched a complete game, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 8.  In his career, Roy is 4-1 with a 1.65 ERA vs the Braves, a very good history headed into tonight’s game.  Oh yeah, Brandon Beachy is 0-3 with a 5.00 ERA vs the Phillies in his career.  In 18 innings vs Beachy, the Phils have scored 10 runs and given him all 3 of his career losses.  4-1 vs 0-3.  You be the judge.

The great match ups don’t end there! Saturday, Cliff “Sit Down Boy” Lee (9-4, 2.92 ERA) will try to bounce back from his ugly performance last Sunday and go for his 10th win.  He allowed 7 earned runs and 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings, but did strike out 9.  Lee will get his chance tomorrow afternoon vs Tommy “4th Member Of” Hanson (10-4, 2.52 ERA).  Hanson is coming off a great start against the Rockies, allowing 1 earned run in 7 innings. In his last 5 starts, he’s gone 5-0 with a 1.97 ERA.  His 2.52 ERA is among the best in the National League.  Bogus.

Cole “Hollywood” Hamels (10-4, 2.40 ERA) and Derek “Drunk and Disorderly” Lowe (5-6, 4.21 ERA) will conclude the series Sunday afternoon.  Cole had a great game Tuesday, throwing 8 strong, solid innings, allowing only 2 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 5 Marlins in a 14-2 Phillies’ win.  Lowe, having a terrible first half, is coming off two straight wins.  He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits, while giving a free pass to 3 Rockies, and striking out 5.  It will be fun.

It’s going to be a helluva weekend in Philly, and it’s also going to be a great weekend for us here at the Phillies Blunt.

Lee Looking to Continue Dominance, Even After Bump In The Road

" rel="bookmark">

After last night’s late walk off win,  I personally believe that we are in the drivers seat for this series.  Raul Ibanez took a 2-0 pitch deep to right field in the bottom of the 10th last night to send the Phillies and the Phillies fans (my father & myself included) home very happy.  A 3-2 win over the Braves in game one of this crucial series was a great momentum booster, and right now I am very confident in Cliff today.  Cliff Lee (9-6, 2.92 ERA) is coming off his first loss since the end of May.  Last Sunday, he allowed 7 runs on 10 hits through 7 1/3 innings, resulting in a 7-4 loss.  Lee had Major League Baseball by the jewels in June. He led the way with 34 consecutive scoreless innings and pitching 42 innings and allowing 1 earned run, accumulating a 0.21 ERA.

It’s not June anymore, it’s July, and the league is 2 days away from heading into the All-Star break.  Now, with a 3 game lead over the Braves in the NL East, Cliff Lee and the Phillies hope to add another number to the left side.  Cliff Lee is 1-3 with a 6.15 ERA career vs the Braves.  In his 2nd start of the season he faced the Braves and allowed 6 earned runs on 10 hits in only 3 1/3 innings.  In the way of the Phillies stands Tommy Hanson (10-4, 2.52 ERA) who is coming off a solid 7 inning outing vs the Rockies, in which he allowed 1 run on only 4 hits.  He is 5-0 with a 1.97 ERA in his last 5 starts, but he is 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA career vs the Phillies.

Hamels VS Lowe To Close Out First-Half

" rel="bookmark">

It’s the finale.

The Phillies and Braves have both used their pitching to each win a game this weekend.  Will pitching prevail in the finale this afternoon?  Cole Hamels (10-4, 2.40 ERA) and Derek Lowe (5-6, 4.21 ERA) will go head-to-head on the hill today in an effort that will put their team in a great position in the NL East heading into the All-Star break.

The first two games this weekend were filled with great pitching, and mediocre hitting.  The Phillies entered the series 2 1/2 games ahead of the Braves, which is where they still sit today.  At 1:05 this afternoon, they have a chance to pull back to 3 1/2 games ahead heading into a four day break.

Cole Hamels has pitched like a 15-year veteran this season, accumulating a 10-4 record while maintaining his ERA to 2.40, one of the best in the National League.  Though he hasn’t received the run support that he deserves, it’s safe to say, Cole is having a Cy Young year.  In his last outing in Florida, he threw 8 solid innings, allowing only 2 earned runs on 8 hits in a 14-2 Phillies’ win.  He learned Sunday that he will be on the All-Star roster in Phoenix on Tuesday…but, he won’t pitch because of his outing today.  He is a career 10-6 with a 3.65 ERA vs the Braves.  Today, he will get his chance to earn his 11th win, and join Roy at that impressive win total.  It’s up to the offense to give him the run support.

That’s where Derek Lowe (5-6, 4.21 ERA) comes in.  Mr. Drunk & Disorderly himself will be on the mound this afternoon.  I wonder if he’s taking a taxi to the game?  Anyway, he has not been pitching like the 15-year veteran he is.  In his last outing, he earned a win going 5 1/3 innings while allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits.  He is a career 8-4 with a 2.90 ERA vs the Fightins.  This will be his third time facing the Phils this season.  In his two starts against us this year, he has pitched 13 innings and allowed only 9 hits and 2 runs.

This game matters in the most extreme way.  We need to break out of the RISP slump we’ve fallen into.  We need to score 4 or 5 runs today and Cole can do the rest.

The Most Deserving All Star

" rel="bookmark">

On Tuesday night fans in Arizona will be treated to some of the biggest stars in the game battling against each other in a game that counts. Our own Philadelphia Phillies will be represented well in the desert, as we send five of our boys to the Midsummer Classic.

If we had our way, the entire All Star Game would be a game played between the Phillies and the AL All Stars. It’s not like we don’t try. I know all of the fans at the Bank fill out the “Phillies Ballot” and just punch out the holes next to the names of every Phillie. It’s something we were raised to do. Root for the home team until you’re blue in the face. Always get behind your players because, after all, they’re a reflection of your phandom. No matter how much someone knocks a player, including yourself, you still root for that guy because he is on your team. The same thing goes for the All Star Game. You vote home team through and through.

Unfortunately there are other teams in the National League, and I think Major League Baseball feels bad for these teams and lets them send some of their players. Regardless, this year we have five, count ‘em, five players at the All Star Game. For these new bandwagon fans, you’re probably used to it. You’ve been spoiled with a championship and too many All Star representatives to even count. But I remember a time when our lone All Star representative was Ricky Botallico, and the game was being held at the Vet! (Which, for you bandwagon fans, is where the Phillies used to play.)

At this years game in Arizona, we’re sending Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Placido Polanco, Cole Hamels, and Shane Victorino. Five worthy players who deserve a spot in Arizona. Assuming though that Polly and Fly HI will be sitting this one out, it looks like we’re only sending our three mound cannons. So with three candidates the big question comes up. Who is the most deserving?

Now to set the record straight, we’re not debating which one is more important to the team. We’re talking about which one deserves to be there the most this year. Which dude out of these hurlers should get the accolades and the big boy pants that come along with an All Star Game selection?

We’ll start at the top of the rotation.

Roy Halladay absolutely deserves to be there. Not only is he a complete game machine, but he makes sure to turn those games into wins. People buy tickets just to see this dude pitch. His eleven wins this season leads the team. His ERA is nothing to squawk at, sitting pretty at 2.45. He has 138 strike outs in 143 innings pitched this season. That’s almost one strikeout per inning, for you non-math majors. Halladay makes the Phillies go, and he instantly makes this team a contender.

Cliff Lee has shown in his recent string of games that he deserves to go to the All Star Game. In yesterday’s game alone he not only pitched a gem, but decided to give himself run support by putting one in the seats. His start to the season had it’s speed bumps, but he has righted the ship as of late. A string of shutout complete game performances has brought his ERA back down while making history in the process. He has 137 strikeouts in 137 innings. And you thought Halladay’s strikeout numbers were good.

Cole Hamels definitely deserves to go to the All Star Game. What a bounce back year he has had. He’s putting up numbers comparable to his 2007 season, which was his only other season with an All Star appearance. His 2.40 ERA leads the team. After the All Star break he’ll have the chance to tie Halladay’s 11 wins, as currently Cole sits with ten wins.

You can make a case for all of these players as being the most deserving. They all deserve to go, and they all were selected rightfully so. This view from the 300 Level though is only showing me one clear cut winner here, and it’s not the obvious choice.

Cole Hamels is having his best season since 2007. In 2007 Cole went 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA. In 183.1 innings pitch, our boy Cole struck out 177 batters. It’s no coincidence 2007 was his only other All Star appearance.

Your winner here is Cole Hamels. Nobody really loses in this event, but if we had to declare a winner it would be Cole. The best part about Cole winning? He wins because of the two other guys he is pitching with. It’s not a competition, but when Roy and Cliff go out there every night and throw complete games and dominate, it makes Cole want to be a better pitcher. He wants to be put in that upper echelon of pitchers where Roy and Cliff are. Playing with them only makes his game better. The more years he spends with those guys, the closer he gets to that elite status.

If we haven’t put him there already.

SW – Brian Maloney

Shane would be joining fellow Phils Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, and Placido Polanco.  Vote Shane!

The Hawaiian is in First on the Fourth

" rel="bookmark">

As we all finally wake up from what should be a late night hangover on this, the Ron Swanson of holidays, our favorite native Hawaiian is leading the All Star Game’s Final Vote.  Shane Victorino is in first place among his National League “competition”.  Shane is sitting pretty on top of the Dodgers Andre Ethier, the Nationals Michael Morse, Arizona’s Ian Kennedy, and Colorado’s Todd Helton.

Voting continues now through Thursday and we all here are doing our best to pimp out Victorino.  I’m really excited to help Shane out.  I just don’t know how I’m going to get that spray painted 8 off the hood of my car.

The Flyin’ Hawaiian won this same competition in ’09.  Everyone remembers him campaigning like a boss in Philadelphia with Mayor Michael Nutter.  According to the Phillies official site, the city of Brotherly Love is doing all it can to help a brother out.  From the site and Todd Zolecki:

“Fans might have noticed an enormous “8″ in red and white lights on the Cira Centre on Sunday night while driving along the Schuylkill Expressway.  Digital billboards along roads and highways will begin running no later than Monday.

“Nutter is spreading the word on Twitter.  He will also wear a Victorino jersey during portions of the Welcome America concert on Monday in Philadelphia, with voting information located on video screens on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  The Phillies will award a randomly selected fan who votes for the outfielder with a Victorino jersey (an All-Star jersey if he wins the vote, a Phillies jersey if he does not).”

All really good stuff and you could even win a Victorino jersey.  You can’t beat that.  Simply by clicking a button.  So take time out of your day.  Put down that beer, and put in your vote.  Go here if you haven’t already:

Keep Shane in first!

Rollins VS Bowa (Ding-Ding)

" rel="bookmark">

The Phillies caught, gutted and served the Marlins in a 14-2 LOL-er of a game last night.  In the game, Jimmy Rollins was 4-5 with a walk and 3 runs scored, and passed Larry Bowa on the list of most hits by a Phillies shortstop in club history.  So, with this milestone passed, now may be a good time to start the debate as to who is the best Phillies shortstop of all time.  Let’s go to the tale of the tape:

Oh wait, before we get into it let’s cue the music, Philadelphians!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In the baby blue corner:  Hailing from Sacramento, California, at 5′ 10″ and a svelte 155 lbs.  He hits both ways and throws right.  Ladies and gentleman of yesteryear,  Larry “The Boa Constrictor” Booooooowaaaa.

And in the red pinstripe corner:  Weighing in at 170 lb. and at a height of 5′ 8″ we have the current shortstop for your Philadelphia Phillies.  He’s from Oakland, California and loves to bowl, boys and girls, Jimmy “The Holy Roller” Rolllllllins.

Okay, cut the music… Or don’t – your call.

You can see that Bowa and Rollins don’t differ too much in their physical make up, but they also have a lot more in common.  For example, Bowa started his career in Philadelphia like Rollins, and at this point, Jimmy in his twelfth year in Phillies red.  That’s the same amount of seasons that Bowa called Philly his home as a player.  Both played on okay teams early in their careers and World Series caliber teams in the later half.  Now, some may argue that this is an apples-to-oranges question, but for these reasons stated above, I feel like it’s a fair argument to have.  So with all do respect to the defensive abilities of Bobby Wine (get out the history books, kids)  let’s see who really is the best Phillies shortstop in the club’s history.

Let’s take a look at their numbers, keeping in mind that Jimmy is in the middle of his 12th year, so Bowa has an extra half season of AB’s and a full season more for some accolades:

–Both Won a World Series with the Phillies, but Jimmy went to two (and could go to another this year) so that slight edge has to go to Jimmy Rollins.

–Gold Gloves:  Bowa 2, and Rollins 3.  Nod to Jimmy again.

–All-Star Game selections:  Bowa 5, and Rollins 3.  Nod to Bowa.

–Rollins also has an MVP award which Larry Bowa does not.

–We know that Rollins just passed Bowa in hits with Bowa at 1,798 and Rollins at 1,802 and counting, but Rollins also has a lot more stolen bases and home runs than the shortstop of the 70′s.

So looking at these numbers, you would think that this would be a complete knockout victory for Jimmy Rollins, or at least a TKO.  He’s faster, stronger, has more hits and is, for the most part, a really well liked Phillie.  You would be wrong, and here’s why.  Larry Bowa had grit and determination and possibly a personality disorder.  He was never the biggest, the strongest or the fastest guy, but he played the game like his life depended on it.  He was intense and had singular focus on winning.  He wasn’t out there trying to make friends, and he didn’t.  Story has it that in the opposing dugout at the Vet, other teams would write loathing messages about Bowa on the walls of the bathroom.  I’m not saying that Rollins doesn’t want to win, and I’m certainly not questioning his work ethic or heart, but when you compare him to the craziness that Bowa played with, its not even close.  That check has to go in the spot next to Larry Bowa’s name.

Really, I feel like this comes down to a question of how you look at baseball.  Numbers-wise, it’s no contest.  Jimmy walks away from the bout with the title of best shortstop in Phillies history.  You just can’t deny the numbers.  But if you’ll recall, that isn’t the belt to win in this fight.  The title in question is best Phillies shortstop of all time.  Here in Philadelphia, we don’t care just about the numbers, we care about what else you bring to the plate.  Bowa had that inferiority complex that all Philadelphia sports’ fans have.  He hustled, worked harder, wanted to get the job done no matter what the cost.  That’s what made him a real Phillie.  We’re a blue collar city, and we like our players blue collar.  We like the underdog who fights no matter what.  It’s why we loved Pete Rose back in the day, and its why we love Chase Utley today.  Those two, along with Larry Bowa, epitomize what we want from our boys on the field.

So this isn’t a knock out by a long shot.  Instead, we have to go to the judges for the winner, and it’s a split decision.

Judge One scores it 10-9 in favor of Jimmy Rollins.

Judge Two scores the round in favor of Larry Bowa with a score of 10-9.

Judge Three scores the round 10-9 in favor of…….Jimmy Rollins.

The final score comes down in favor of Rollins for one reason.  He’s still going.  The season isn’t over, and all he can do from here on out is pad his numbers.  If Rollins stays with the Phillies after this season, it will only strengthen his stance as the best Phillies shortstop of all time.  And God willing, a second World Series ring will make this a non-discussion.  However, I will say this:  The only reason that Rollins is half the player that he is today is because, oddly enough, Larry Bowa was his corner man in this fight.  Early in his career, Rollins’ manager was Bowa, and it was Bowa’s pushing and molding that turned a young guy with a lot of natural talent into a team leader and an exceptional player.  Ostensibly, it was Bowa who beat himself in this fight.  Neat, huh?

I can be persuaded either way on this argument.  If you feel compelled, comment below to tell me I’m a moron, and let me know why.  I’ll do my best to comment back on all of them.

Doc Heads Back to Stomping Grounds Against The Jays

" rel="bookmark">

Just as the people of Toronto have been waiting, I have been too.  Roy Halladay (10-3, 2.40 ERA) is returning to the Rogers Centre for the first time since leaving the team in 2009.  Roy spent the majority of his career with the Blue Jays, being drafted in 1995 and making his debut in 1998, he took his 2nd career start into the 9th inning without allowing any hits.  A staple in the city of Toronto, Halladay spent 11 years of his career in the big T.O.  So, after taking out the line up card yesterday and receiving that standing ovation, I wonder how the Jays’ fans will greet Doc as he’s on the hill in the bottom half of the innings.  Roy is on fire this season, (not surprising anyone) already hitting double digits in Wins along with 5 complete games.  His 5th CGSO came in his last start vs Oakland, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits to earn his 10th win.  The Phillies always give Kendrick the run support in his outings.  7 runs for K.K , and the guy allowed 6 of his own yesterday.  Doc has been hit with hard losses this season getting little to no run support.  He generally doesn’t need 6 or 7 runs a game because he keeps the opposing offense down to 3 or less runs.

Offense…offense…offense,  that is the key word for today!  Doc has never faced his own team so there is no history between the two opposing each other.  Not that I’m doubting Doc, but it would be nice to see the Phillies continue to score runs.  They will have to take on righty Carlos Villanueva (5-1, 3.15 ERA), who is coming off a six-inning outing in which he allowed two runs on five hits in a 6-3 win over the Cardinals.

Will Bautista take Roy deep?  The guy certainly took Kendrick back to the States yesterday.  It seems that when he is nearly beamed, he beams it out on the next pitch.  Roy isn’t known to throw at guys, so that might factor itself out,  but Bautista has gone deep 25 times.  I’m not really concerned about it, but that’s where we may need some insurance runs in the late innings or something.

Today’s Line up:

1. J Roll SS

2. Polly 3B

3. Utley 2B

4. Howard DH

5. Victorino CF

6. Ibanez LF

7. D-Brown RF

8. Chooch C

9. Gload 1B

Pitching: Roy Halladay (10-3, 2.40 ERA)

Let’s Go Phillies!

Angry Birds And Winning Phillies

" rel="bookmark">

Roy Halladay made his triumphant return to Toronto today, and I do mean triumphant.  The standing ovation that Roy received from the fans at the Rogers Centre lasted more than a minute and a half.  If you want to see the video for yourself, click here. In a complete game performance, the good doctor allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and 3 runs, while striking out 8.  This was the first time that Halladay threw against his former club in Toronto, and the first time that Toronto experienced the Doc Effect.  Man, if this guy isn’t on your team, you have to want to pull your hair out.  Home plate umpire, Alfonso Marquez, was giving the edges, and Roy was using them.  With Roy’s 8 K’s, he took over the league lead in strike outs with 131 punch outs.

The game wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies, however.  The Phillies were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but the Blue Jays would come back to tie it in the bottom of the fourth off a shot to center from Jose Bautista that was, literally, still rising when it hit the windows over the center field wall.  It was Bautista’s 26th home run of the season and it was long.  Now, it’s not good form to claim that someone’s cheating if you don’t have the evidence, but I will say that Bautista’s surge in power numbers are very “interesting.”  Again, I’m not going to say the “S” word, but someone seriously needs to check this guy’s juice box.

The Phillies were able to answer back, however, with a run of their own in the top of the 5th, but the lead was not meant to last.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Jay birds dinked and doinked there way to 2 runs to take a 3-2 lead.  That lead would last until the top of the 7th when Carlos Ruiz lead off the inning with a double off the wall.  He would make it to third, tagging up on a Jimmy Rollins fly ball, and then stayed there while Placido Polanco grounded out to short.  With two outs and two strikes, Chase Utley would show us why we love him so, by putting a ball over the wall to right for a two run home run.  The Phillies had the lead 4-3, and Doc looked to keep  it that way.  He struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, while also allowing a hit, and kept the Blue Jays off the board again in the eighth.  Then the top of the ninth came around, and so did the fireworks.

The tallest man in baseball, Toronto reliever Jon Rauch, came in to pitch, but he wouldn’t make it through the inning.  In a tough AB against Ryan Howard, the home plate umpire, Marquez, called two very close pitches balls resulting in a walk.  With runners on 1st and 2nd, Shane Victorino served a single to left which scored Chase Utley.  Rauch didn’t take to kindly to this, sticking his glove in the the face of Alfonso Marquez and telling him that the run was him.  Marquez returned the favor with the old heave-ho to Rauch.  The 6′ 11″ pitcher went ballistic, and had to be restrained by his manager John Farrell and several other players.  Farrell would end up getting tossed as well, moments later, while complaining about the strike zone.  He and Marquez got into each other’s faces, dirt was kicked and Phillies fans around the world laughed as Toronto fans threw things on the field.

Following that, Roy went out and finished what he started, blanking the Jays in the ninth frame to earn the win in his sixth complete game of the season.  The Phillies now look to complete the sweep tomorrow at 1:07 with Cliff “Whater” Lee on the mound.

Bringin' High Hopes Without The Smoke

Pedroia Won’t Sign for Vance

At first it was a funny afterthought to a game where the Sox players should have been asking for Vance Worley’s autograph. But now it seems like this could be the start of something bigger.

After last nights win over the Red Sox, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press wrote a recap article that started with this sentence, “Vance Worley didn’t get Dustin Pedroia’s autograph. He got the former MVP’s attention—and the rest of the Boston Red Sox, too.” Intrigued, I read on.

It continued with, “[Worley] sent someone to get Pedroia’s signature on a ball before the game, but came up empty.” They then quote Vance about the incident and he said, “He wouldn’t give me one until I met him. Then I threw one up and in on him so I probably won’t get it now.”

The story was picked up by Yahoo’s baseball blog Big League Stew which is run by Kevin Kaduk this morning and he had this to say, “Worley wanted Pedroia’s autograph because of their common bond of being from the Sacramento area. He can also remember sneaking away from the Cape Cod League a few years back to go see Pedroia and the Red Sox play at Fenway Park.”

The story was then reposted on various other news sites this morning and I thought nothing of it.

But then it stayed with me all day. It buried itself deep into my cranium. How could Dustin do that? Why wouldn’t he sign the ball for Vance? Everyone knows our love for the Vanimal here. It’s an unspoken agreement between the five men that write for this site. We just all love Vance Worley.

That being said, I think Vance needs to take this as the line being drawn in the sand.

After the game the Red Sox had nothing but praise for the Rec Spec’d one. Pedroia said, ““He had great mound presence, and we were all very impressed. It’s really good for a kid that young to have a presence like that on the mound. He’s going to be a good one.”

And in his head Vance said, You should have signed my ball.

David Ortiz was equally impressed saying, “Did that guy just come up or something? Man, because he looked pretty good to me. He had decent stuff, and it really looks like he’s been around for a long time.

“They’ve got four big starters here, right? Well, he looked like one of them out there tonight. He really looked comfortable. It’s obvious that he’s listening to those big starters over there. It’s rubbing off on him.”

And in his head Vance said, Dustin should have signed my ball.

The real story here is that other teams, especially good ones, are starting to take notice of Vance Worley. It’s something that we’ve been saying all year long, that this kid is special.

The made up story here (which I’m much more interested in) is that Vance Worley threw down the gauntlet. News worthy? Maybe. Fire starter? You betcha. He asked for a simple favor, and was denied. Now it’s on til the break of dawn. Fingers crossed, we might even see the feud renewed in the fall.

The Red Sox-Phillies rivalry has just been ignited.

Doc Returns to The T.O. As Phillies Stay for Three

" rel="bookmark">

After getting sunburn all over my body at yesterday’s game,  I cannot wait to relax in my chair, crack open a six-pack, and time my TV and radio so I catch Franske & L.A. instead of the Dip Shit-Duo.  The Phillies are in Toronto for three games this weekend, all at 1:07 PM, and Doc will face his former team tomorrow afternoon.  But for Today,  Kyle Kendrick (4-4, 3.23 ERA) will take on Ricky Romero (7-7, 2.74 ERA) and the Blue Jays.  Kendrick is making his first start since game one of two in the double header on June 15.  He allowed only 1 run on 5 hits through 7 innings in a 8-1 Phils’ win.  Romero is coming off a 4 hit shut out over St. Louis,  where he struck out 5 red birds to get his 7th win. Over his last three starts, Romero has allowed just three earned runs while striking out 21. Romero has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last nine starts.  This guy can go deep into the game for the Jays, but then again, Kendrick is good for 7 if he can keep the Phils in the game.  I wonder how many Phillies’ fans grabbed their passports to cross the border to see the Fightins?  It’s usually Citizens Bank Park in the North, but around 44,000 are at the game today.  We’ll see.

Another point I want to hit on, is Jose Bautista.  For real?  This guy HAS to be on steroids, 24 home runs and 52 RBIs?  Yeah, anybody can do that.  But this guy is crazy good… and pretty damn scary.  I hope Kendrick is smart and pitches around the guy in his first career start against Toronto.  Romero is 1-0, with a 1.93 ERA career vs the Phillies.  Let’s pull for a good start on the road.  This year, the Phillies are 19-17 on the road compared to their 32-14 record at home.

First Pitch @ 1:07 PM

Today’s Lineup:

1. J Roll DH 2. Polly 3B

3. Utley 2B

4. Howard 1B

5. Victorino CF

6. Francisco LF

7. D-Brown RF

8. Chooch C

9. Valdez SS

Pitching: Kendrick (4-4, 3.23 ERA)

Happy Canada Day

" rel="bookmark">

The sun rose in Canada today, and Canadians popped open a Molson, saluted their poster of Alan Thicke, got on their moose and set off for the syrup factory ready for a day filled with Canada Day festivities.  For those of you who don’t know, Canada Day celebrates the day that a beaver saved Shania Twain after she fell through some ice while playing hockey.  As part of their Canada Day celebration, many Canadians decided to watch their beloved Toronto Blue Jays take on our beloved Philadelphia Phillies for a rousing game of baseball, or as its known in the Great North, rounders. (Except in the part where they speak French, those people just think baseball is the weirdest game of hockey they’ve ever seen.)  Before the game, Mounties spread corn flakes on the field, the first pitch was thrown by the president of Canada, Bryan Adams, and Canadian pride was flying high.  There was a lot riding on this game, too, because as we all know, if someone beats the Blue Jays on Canada Day then they gain ownership over the country of Canada.

The Phillies didn’t really want to own Canada because that’s like owning a Billy Ripken rookie card, so they decided to throw Kyle Kendrick.  True to form, KK allowed two runs in the first inning and the Phillies were looking to play from behind, something that they would have to do for most of the day.   Battle back they did, however, and the Phillies were able to put up a run in the 2nd and 3rd innings against Blue Jays’ pitcher Ricky Canada to tie the game at 2-2.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the 5th when Kendrick gave up a monster two run shot to Eric Canada that flew like 150 meters or something (I’m not good with the metric system because I’m an American).

The Phillies battled back to cut the lead to 3-4 in the top of the 6th, thanks to a double and a swipe of third by Domonic Brown and a single to right by Chooch.  Then, in the 7th the Phillies were able to put a two spot on the board via a single by Howard, an RBI triple by Shane Victorino and a sac fly by Ben Francisco to gain their first lead of the afternoon.  The lead wouldn’t last, however, as Kyle Kendrick was still in the game.  KK was able to record two outs in the bottom of the 7th, but gave up a single to Aaron Canada.  So with two outs and a man on first, the home run leader of the league, Jose Canada, stepped into the box.  Chooch called time and went out to the mound to tell Kyle not to throw a strike.  Chase Utley came over from second to repeat what Chooch calls words just to make sure there was no confusion.  Kyle Kendrick looked at the dugout and Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee mouthed in unison “don’t throw an f-ing strike.”  My mom went out to the mound to tell Kyle not to throw a strike.

Kyle threw a strike.

What followed was a 3,000 meter (again, not great at the metric system) bomb to left to give the Blue Jays a one run edge.  The Jays would hold onto that lead heading into the ninth where Toronto closer, Frank Canada, came in to try and record the save.  He walked Polanco after a full count, and got Chase in the whole with two strikes.  Chase would battle at the plate before sending a fly ball to left which should have been caught.  However, left fielder, Juan Canada, completely misplayed the ball and found it sailing over his head, giving Chase a gift of a double and allowing Polly to get to third.  Howard would then come up to fight a pitch off and send it into shallow center, allowing Polanco and Utley to both score.  The Phillies had the lead and Canada’s collective little Canadian heart broke as we in the Delaware Valley laughed like mad men.  Bastardo would come in to seal the deal in the top of the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning that can only be described as filthy.  His ERA is now at 0.90.  The kid is playing ridiculously good.

So the Phillies won and Canadians were really polite about the whole thing, apologizing for taking the lead in the first place, and all.  The Phillies won the county of Canada and gave it right back to Bryan Adams explaining that it wasn’t worth the hassle.  All the Canadians went home to watch Kids In The Hall and John Candy movies, as of course is tradition in Canada.  I’m sure their barbecuing gofers and enjoying what’s left of their Canada Day.

Silly Canadians.

Hamels Injured In Loss To Red Sox

Cole Hamels was dealing early against the Boston Red Sox today, but it wasn’t to last.  After keeping the Bo Sox off the board for the first 3 1/3 innings, Adrian Gonzalez stepped into the box and dealt a blow to Hamels.  Not on the scoreboard, but rather to the hand.   A line drive, bullet back through the box struck Hamels on his non-pitching hand.  Hamels was able to stay in to complete the inning, but not the game.  He was pulled after the 4th inning with what the Phillies are calling a hand contusion.  X-Rays on the hand were reported back to be negative, and Cole is listed as day-to-day.  He is expected to make his next start.

While this is good news for the Phillies in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t for today’s match up.  David Herndon came in relief, (if you want to call what he does relief) and promptly gave up 2 runs.  In the next inning, Herndon continued to struggle, giving up a solo shot that barely made it over the right field wall to Jason Varitek, which allowed the Red Sox to go up 3-0.  In the top of the seventh, Andrew Carpenter came in to pitch.  He let the first two he faced get on to create a 1st and 3rd with no outs situation, but struck out the next two, and induced a pop up against a pinch hitting JD Drew to get out of the inning unscathed.  Here in lies the best part of the game, listening to the round of boos that JD Drew still receives from the Phillies Phaithful.

For Boston, the pitching story was completely different.  John Lester was dealing from the first inning on.  He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth, a single by Chase Utley, and only allowed one more for the rest of his outing.  The only real jam that Lester got into came in the bottom of the seventh when he allowed a one out single to Ryan Howard and a walk to Shane Victorino.  With two on, and down three, the Phillies were threatening to put something together, but only threatening.  Ben Francisco lined out to center, and Raul Ibanez struck out swinging to end the inning, the chance to score, and John Lester’s outing.  Lester ended with a line of 7IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 2BB, and 5K to earn the W.

The rest of the game was really a formality.  The Phillies had the wind out of their sails.  Carpenter gave up back-to-back home runs, (which was nearly back-to-back-to-back home runs) and the Phillies were down 5-0 against the Bo Sox.  The offense for the Phillies went quietly in the eighth, but managed to break up the shut out in the ninth compliments of a 2 run homer off the bat of Ryan Howard. The Red Sox would go on to record the win and avoid the sweep.  So, the Phillies went down easier today then a stripper at a Duke Lacrosse party, (too soon?) but managed to take two out of three from the Bean Eaters.  It’s all about winning the series in baseball, so while a sweep would have been nice, we’ll take the series win.  The Phillies head north of the border next, for a three game series against the Toronto Blue Jays to close out inner league play.
