Phils Acquire Ty Wigginton From Rockies For PTBNL

The Phillies added to their bench today by acquiring utility player, Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies. Wigginton is coming over to Philadelphia along with $2 million in cash and the Phillies are sending a player to be named later to Colorado in return.

The Wiggle-nator has a career .256 batting average, 158 home runs, and 548 runs batted in over ten big league seasons. This past season, Wigginton batted .242 and hit 15 home runs in 130 games with Colorado. Wigginton has played for six teams in his ten-year career and in joining the Phillies this season, he obviously has his best shot at winning anything big.

Ruben Amaro Jr. has stated that he and the Phillies’ organization had been eyeing him up for quite some time, a couple years to be un-exact.

“We’ve actually talked about Ty for years. We’ve talked about him as a third baseman in the past. We’ve talked about him as a utility guy in the past. We had some discussions with the agents in the past.” Amaro said.

The big honcho also stated that he is fond of the Wiggle-nator and his assets.

“I like three things about him,”  Amaro Jr. said. “I like his makeup. I like that he fits our club in that he can play first base and third base. And I like that he gives us another guy with power off the bench. We had been looking to add depth to our bench.”

If gaining Ty Wigginton means that Michael Cuddyer won’t be in Clearwater come this February, than it’s probably because Wigginton is only making $4 million for all of 2012. This “relatively cheap” pickup for the Phillies could free up some cash that can be used for either a bigger pickup this offseason, or help with the Jimmy Rollins cause.

Nonetheless, the Phillies have begun to bolster up their bench. First Jim Thome, now Ty Wigginton.

Will Michael Cuddyer be next?
